Underground house connection - digging and sealing questions

Featured Replies

My contractor hasn't done a proper job during the install of the house underground electrical connection.

The HDPE pipe has been cut in two sections.

It's been installed at a very shallow depth, of just a few cms deep.

A couple of questions.

I plan to deepen the trench at its most vulnerable section in order to position a portion of the cable's length deeper underground.

I have already dug the cable out and placed it on surface, right next to the trench.

Would it be safe to move the cable back into the deepened trench while it's live?

What would be the appropriate range depth of the trench?

How can I seal the open HDPE joint to prevent moisture from entering the pipe?

Will the electrical insulating tape work?

Thanks!!!

Assuming the correct cable has been used inside the pipe I would have no issues moving it whilst powered up.

Keeping the wet out is going to be more fun, regular tape will fall off very quickly. There are a number of self-adhesive "rubber" tapes intended for keeping water IN pipes I would imagine these would work pretty well, I don't have any recommendations I'm afraid.

You will have to clean all the mud off the pipe in the area of course.

Luckily, again assuming the correct cable, a bit of water isn't going to hurt as the cable is actually designed to be direct buried anyway.

I'm thinking of trying the Liquid Nail adhesive.

It sticks to everything while forming a water proof seal.

Give it a go, I'd still want some sort of sticky tape over it as a bit of reinforcement.

Can you see the markings on the cable, just so we can be sure it's the proper stuff.

This is probably the only one I have confidence in.image.thumb.jpg.fcfa4f4c01596111623aa30808c35145.jpg

To whoever added the "confused" reaction to my earlier post.

Why not post whatever is confusing you so we can address same?

Looks good, a little more of the wording would be nice but if not possible I think we can say that's the good stuff ????

Maybe a picturw of the markings near one of the ends ?

If this is HDPE pipe, we would usually fusion weld the ends together. But as mentioned if it is only for impact protection and the cable is rated fir direct burial, then should not be an issue how the ends are taped up. I would not want solvents from the liquid rubber or nails product to get in tcontact with the cable.

Don't see any markings on the wires

Yeah, markings will be on the jacket ????

Of course, they "should" have brought the jacket through the walking-stick and only removed it when it was completely out of the weather.
