An elderly Swedish man who was arrested at an airport in Zimbabwe with 3 kilogrammes of heroin bound for Thailand earlier this month appeared in court yesterday.

On April 8, detectives from Zimbabwe’s CID Drugs and Narcotics Harare received information that 71 year old Hans Arne Ingemar Pettersson was in possession of drugs that he intended to smuggle to Thailand on a Qatar Airways flight.

Detectives headed to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare where they found Pettersson in the departures hall. They identified him by his clothes and passport. Pettersson was pushing a trolley carrying two bags, a pink one and a black one.

Officials searched the bags to find brown powder – suspected to be dangerous drugs – inside a plastic bag stashed in a secret compartment inside the pink bag. The plastic bag was tested and found to contain 3 kilogrammes of heroin with a street value of US$3.4 million (117 million baht) in Zimbabwe.

Pettersson was arrested and detained under charges of unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs. He was remanded in custody and asked to request bail from the High Court, which was rejected.

I wonder what his life expectancy will now be once banged up in a Harare prison?

If it was his defence would be that some drunken Brit must have planted it there.

Is this the usual route to smuggle Heroin into Thailand?

I would thought it more likely to come straight into Thailand from that whole 'golden triangle' area / Myanmar.

How and why was this guy there with this pakage?

What an absolute fool, especially at his age.

His only hope will be to wangle a prisoner exchange to go back home and a cushy Swedish prison.

Not a good retirement plan strategy imo idiot

Wow, looks like he didn't mind having a very "structured" & rent + food free kind of retirement.  ????

I can understand trying to take it out of thailand, but bringing it in  that is rather silly

The old fool... he needs a check-up from the neck up.

"Carrying coals to Newcastle" comes to mind.

Senior Swiss spends last of his days in Thailand Jail.

Is that how the head line should read?

Maybe he will spend some time in Thailand, then the rest back in his home country.

A common mistake: Sweden = Switzerland. Well they both start with "SW" have lots of snow and were (until recently) neutral. Obviously same country.

Why would he go to a Thai jail/prison, he was caught in Zimbabwe.

I just don't understand why people still try to smuggle anything these days including drugs. Every airport has X-rays and sniffer dogs. You will not get away with it (well some might do)

But even not declaring food brought in from home countries is dangerous as well. So, what do those people think?

They decide to take a gamble.. To them the financial reward is worth the risk.

They are dumb.

Bringing heroin to Thailand?  I don't understand this.  Makes as much sense as bringing pineapples to Hawaii.

Maybe it's his personal stash and he's got one helluva habit.

Money the root of all evil. At 71 why would he want to give so much pain to others?

I don't think they are concerned about others or what they do. They are just thinking about the money.

Sad state of affairs that he resorted to this. Some of the posts are telling as well.
