Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat issued a statement today (Thursday) via Facebook to defend himself against allegations that he lied about being detained by military officials at Bangkok’s military airport, following the coup in September 2006, which prevented him from attending his father’s funeral.

 

Pita said he never expected that he would have to explain such a painful experience as the sudden loss of his father, to whom he had no chance to say goodbye because of the coup in 2006, which ousted the government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

 

Critics claim that what he said in his recent interview with TV news anchor Sorayuth Suthassanachinda over the incident contradicted what he said in an interview on the same subject which he gave to another TV anchor, Surivipa, over a decade ago.

Aside from the expected picayune political shenanigans and tabloid-like desires, I still might be quite weary towards their determination to retain their hold on everything.....surely, the traditional elitist aren't gonna give it up that easy. 

 

Even if they are down [and know it], not gonna change the reality that they'll connive their way back into the power fold - by hook or crook. 

Unfortunately Thai politics is a dirty business and the army don't like loosing even though they have never fought in a battle it's all about power by any means necessary they want to rule

They will "win" the election.

 

Those supporting the present status quo are really worried about this man. My wife says that she, and all her friends will be voting for him. She says he is the only candidate with policies to help the poor and give access to education for all kids; he is also a strong supporter of Ukraine. My wife says that most Thai people under 50 think he’s the best thing since somtum.

Nice to see that someone understands how Thailand works. The army will remain in control and will give Thaksin's band of crooks the boot just as they always have done. Thaksin knows this, but just wants to fill his pockets some more.

Not this time. People have woken up a bit. Even with all the effort to keep the masses uneducated its beginning to change. Watch the young turn out, especially those around university age and recent grads with no chance at a job.  Damn good chance things begin to change. The police and military do not have the following they once did.

Are you referring to mature people with lots of wisdom and life experience? Unlike in the ridiculous and waning Western world, in Thailand such people are held in high esteem because they keep society on an even keel.

Might very well be a reason for Phue Thai not getting 50%+1. I hope so. I would rather see a coalition between these two just to keep the Thaksin puppet in check.

We will see on May 14. I have closely followed Thai politics since Chatchai Choonhavan was overthrown by the military and General Suchinda in 1991. Best chance of some real change since then.

Me too, but what really matters is what happens after May 14th, rather than on May 14th.

 

As you say, time will tell. Thailand is an instinctively conservative country, especially those who wield the real power.

I have worked in the Thai university system for 30 years and they will this year. There are rallies on campus and lots of canvassers for the first time. Lots of educated unemployed young Thai's out there. These thoughts are not facts by any means, just my observations based on being here and being involved in education for a long time. Must admit I have had my hopes dashed before.

 

No one ever thought Phua Thai would sweep to power in 2001 either. So my fingers are crossed hoping for a good change for once.

I share your observation on the young energized to vote. For months, youth protesters as many as 100,000 descended on Bangkok and also in campuses demanding new elections and amending the constitution. The energy has not gone away and this election will be remembered for the youth turning up and sending a clear message to the faux military government that they are not wanted. It will be an election for the Gen Z, Y and X which make up 38% of the eligible voters. Meanwhile the boomers above 67 who likely to support UTN and PPRP constitute only 6-7% of eligible voters. The rallies of the PTP and MFP are very well organized with big turnouts contrasting with the low energy and turnout for the military parties. PTP and MFP will win big in this election judging from sentiments from the ground.

With the final play being a coup.

 

They will resort to the usual tactics of using the courts, street protests, disinformation campaigns, and threats to certain institutions as the excuse.

 

Not so many will be fooled this time though, but there are still people that will fall for it, just like the last time.

More often than not, things are never what they appear to be. 

But you, like me and many others don't KNOW that it will be different this time around.

 

You don't think it will change, while I and many others think it will change.

 

This of course is my own opinion, just as yours is your opinion.

 

I try to look at things from a positive point of view, you take the opposite view on this subject.

 

If nothing will change, then why are the Brits still not slaves of the Romans, why is the USA an independent country and still not a colony of the UK, why is the UK a partner of France and Germany after fighting them for many years?

 

Things do change over time. Now it is time for Thailand to change.

 

What will the military do, if they and their agencies cheat as they did the last time, if the Thai people refuse to accept it?

PT are going to win in a landslide

Prayuth and Prawit will receive embarrassingly low level of votes

Thaksin's daughter will be PM

Thaksin is going to return to Thailand this year

The constitution will be replaced with one very similar to the 1997 peoples constitution

The unelected Senators will be no more

The military leadership will be replaced with Thaksin appointees in October

Prayuth's corruption during the last 9 years will be investigated and exposed

There will be judicial reform - the courts will be depoliticised

The use of live ammunition on citizens in 2010 will be investigated and exposed

Thanathorn will be allowed to return to politics and probably win the election after the next one further consigning the military to obscurity

and maybe, just maybe - a few Generals may yet end up in jail or exile

 

It's over.
