A Texas man who killed a protester almost three years ago was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison, although the state’s Republican governor has promised to approve a pardon if given the opportunity.

Daniel Perry, 35, an Army sergeant, was convicted last month by a Travis County jury of murder in the fatal shooting of Garrett Foster in downtown Austin in July 2020.

On April 8, the day after the jury returned its verdict, Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted that he wanted to pardon Perry, and said he asked the Board of Pardons and Paroles to consider the matter.

No clue why Gov. Abbott knee-jerkily responded so quickly after the verdict? He often comes across as hyserical and emotional, not someone I'd trust with the levers of power.

He could have waited until sentencing, while formulating a cogent narrative and response in support of a pardon, and then presented his plan to the public. He could have assembled a group of criminal justice experts, and lawyers, to support his decision to pardon.

He seems more interested in scoring political points than justice, or rational behavior.

He’s pandering for votes couldent care less about safety or rule of law only cares about garnering votes ill responsible and lousy judgment imo

It turns out that this criminal actually discussed his desire to kil lthe demonstrators and confessed he is a racist.

Records reveal racist comments, threats of violence convicted killer Gov. Abbott wants to pardon

The man Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pledged to pardon for the murder of an Austin protester, often made racist comments and made clear his desire to kill protesters in the months leading up to Garrett Foster’s death, the Texas Tribune reported.

The evidence pulled from Daniel Perry’s phone records and social media accounts is part of court documents unsealed Thursday....

In April 2020, he sent a meme, which included a photo of a woman holding her child’s head under water in the bath, with the text, “WHEN YOUR DAUGHTERS FIRST CRUSH IS A LITTLE NEGRO BOY,” according to the state’s filing.

Still havent heard from the pardon review team yet!

Under Texas law, the Board of Pardons and Paroles has to first recommend a pardon before the governor can act on it. Abbott said he was permitted to ask the board to review it, and he said he asked the board to do so and to expedite the matter.

That's actually pretty funny as memes go.

But seriously  this guy seems to have gone over the line. I am normally a fan of protesters getting what they deserve but that isn't the case here.  Perry fully deserves his sentence.

Does he do that for all people conviced of homicide or only for racists who explicitly express a desire to kill protesters?

They can protest. They can't expect to riot or burn businesses or assault people with impunity.  If they do, they might meet a little pushback.   I agree that Abbot screwed the pooch on this one.

Were the protesters in Austin rioting, burning businesses or assaulting people with impunity? If not, why even bring it up?

Not surprised you find it funny. As I recall, you once used the word "cuck" in one of your comments. It's clear to see where you're coming from.

What is wrong with "cuck"? A perfectly servicable English word that The Bard used as well.  I am coming from a place with a sense of humour, not afraid to laugh at the absurd or outrageous.

Right. And the English of Shakespeare is pretty much the same as it is today? Was it used in a political context back then?

US
a weak or servile man (often used as a contemptuous term for a man with moderate or progressive political views).

"an insulting word for a weak man, used especially by people on the extreme right of politics to refer to men with politically liberal views:"
