Alleged cyanide killer’s lawyer off the case as police and key witness meet Am Cyanide in prison

by James Morris and Son Nguyen

image.jpeg

Deputy National Police Chief General Surachate Hakparn (centre) attended the Central Women’s Correctional Institution in Bangkok on Saturday as police again questioned suspected serial killer Sararat Rangsiwutthaporn (right) in the presence of an old friend who received a surprising package delivery in recent days and who immediately contacted police. The suspect’s lawyer Ms Thannicha Ek Suwanwa (inset left) has just confirmed that she is withdrawing from the case while a new lawyer will meet her at the prison on Monday, May 15th.

Am Cyanide was served a 15th warrant and charged in prison on Tuesday for premeditated murder related to a case going back to 2015. On Saturday, it was reported that she was both laughing and crying while adapting a defensive or suspicious posture to a long-time friend who was accompanied by police on a visit to meet her at the facility.

Phuket Vice Governor Anupap Rodkwan Yodrabam chaired a meeting this week on control of motorbike rental outlets on the island. Hours later, emergency services responded to another death, that of a Russian tourist near Kathu Beach with a 64% rise in fatalities on the island’s roads this year.

77% of those who die on Thailand’s roads are still men with 79% of the fatalities occurring in motorbike accidents. Action being undertaken in Phuket comes as vehicle deaths have surged this year on the island. Nearly 25% of the dead have been foreigners.

Move Forward Party’s good election result leaves uncertainty as to who will form the government
by News Desk

image.jpeg

The results of the General Election are still coming in and they are throwing up a range of conflicting possibilities. It is good news for the Move Forward Party and bad news for Pheu Thai while the Bhumjaithai Party appears to have been vindicated for its marijuana policy while General Prayut Chan ocha’s United Thai Nation (Ruam Thai Sang Chart) Party has fared moderately with the Palang Pracharat Party surviving. The electorate has signalled change but voters have not turned on the coalition government parties to the extent that polls suggested.

The results so far are good news for the Bhumjaithai Party and Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and may be seen as a rejection of Mr Chuwit Kamolvisit’s anti-marijuana crusade.

Scorching electricity costs may sear the economic recovery with a new threat to reduced inflation
by Joseph O' Connor

image.jpeg

A report this week from the Kasikorn Research Centre, the research arm of Kasikorn Bank, warned that rising electricity costs in the tourism and manufacturing sectors could impact the country’s competitiveness and its efforts to keep inflation at bay.

Thailand’s inflation rate fell to 2.67% in April from 2.8% in March and is within the Bank of Thailand’s targeted range but the continued high cost of electricity, which has risen dramatically, could be only starting to feed into higher prices. The Ministry of Commerce in early April, projected that inflation will, however, continue to decline within a range of 1.7% to 2.7%.

Where Pheu Thai failed and where Move Forward capitalized
By Arun Saronchai

image.jpeg

When the dust settles on this election and the results are finalized, it may turn out that Pheu Thai and Move Forward are only separated by a few seats and a few thousand votes. However, if PT manages to surpass Move Forward in the final tally, even such a scenario would be a disastrous outcome for the team in red.
