Thai anti-establishment activists plan rally on Tuesday to pressure Senate

The “United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration” (UFTD), which is affiliated with the Ratsadon anti-establishment group, is urging members of the public to rally in front of the Thai parliament this Tuesday at 5pm, to put pressure on the Senate not to vote against Move Forward party’s Pita Limjaroenrat as Thailand’s 30th prime minister.

Move Forward party optimistic of positive response from senators

A combined total of 313 votes in the House are sufficient for the coalition partners, led by Move Forward, to form a stable government and the party is confident that senators will have positive opinion of the party once they see its memorandum of understanding (MoU), said Chaithawat Tulathong, Move Forward party secretary-general.

Attorney General to have final say on prosecution in court for money laundering of Senator Upakit
by James Morris and Son Nguyen

image.jpeg
Senator Upakit Pachariyangkun (right) during his emotional press conference with the media in March this year in which he protested his innocence. Investigators and police working with the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) have now recommended that he face prosecution for money laundering and other offences. The final decision rests with the Thai Attorney General, Ms Naree Tanthasathien.

Senator may be on the verge of being prosecuted for money laundering and other offences if the country’s Attorney General gives the say-so following a decision on Friday by investigators to indict the upper house member on criminal charges.

Jatuporn warns Pheu Thai may be turned as he predicts a political impasse. Should wait for 2024
by Joseph O' Connor

image.jpeg

Former United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship Charman Jatuporn Prompan (centre), himself a reminder of past political struggles, sees little chance of Pita Limjaroenrat (inset left) and the new Move Forward coalition getting the votes it needs from the Thai Senate appointed by the junta after the 2019 General Election and which is thought to be heavily influenced by both Prime Minister General Prayut Chan ocha and Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan (inset right). He intimated the coalition should wait until June 2024, when the Senate’s voting rights expire under the 2017 Constitution.

The surprise election result has raised the stakes in Thai politics as the public has voted for a party that wants to see political accountability and real democracy.
