CHIANG RAI: --  May 25, 2023, a woman dressed in traditional attire found herself stranded atop a signal pole, unable to descend, reported Siam Rath.

The incident took place in the village of San Tan Luang, Rim Kok Sub-district, Mueang Chiang Rai District, prompting a swift response from the local police officers and the Chiang Rai Saeng Thamma Charitable Foundation rescue unit.

Upon receiving the report, officers from the Muang Chiang Rai police station responded to the scene alongside the rescue team. Their investigation led them to a signal transmission tower, standing approximately 100 meters tall, situated away from residential areas.

At the top of the tower, perched precariously on the ladder, was an elderly woman estimated to be between 50 to 60 years old. Adorned in a vibrant pink sarong and a black and pink shirt, her presence atop the cell phone tower caused a stir among onlookers.

Concerned for the woman's safety, authorities inquired about her identity and whether she resided in the nearby Ban San Tan Luang area of Muang District, Chiang Rai Province. They also suspected the possibility of a mental illness. Officers and rescue volunteers attempted to coax her down, as they feared the potential dangers of remaining at such heights.

In a daring rescue operation, the team cautiously ascended the ladder of the signal tower, inching closer to the woman standing on the uppermost platform. During their interaction, they discovered that she had climbed up but was experiencing discomfort in her feet. Realizing her predicament, they retrieved a new pair of shoes to alleviate her discomfort.

With the support of the rescue staff, the elderly woman gradually made her descent, ensuring her safe return to the ground. The spectacle drew excitement from those witnessing the event.

Preliminary inquiries shed light on the woman's motives for the unusual climb. She simply expressed a desire to admire the view from atop the tower, offering a brief explanation for her impromptu ascent.

Some people will do anything to get a good signal.

I do recall some 20 years ago that in order to get a mobile phone signal at my ex's Isaan home I had to climb onto the roof of her house!!
