Hi,anyone on the forum keeps love birds????. I got up this morning and one of my 2 love birds is dead,

I started off with 1 male bird about a year ago,he was given to me by someone who could no longer take care of him,he was only young and could be handled, after a while he started jumping round his cage like he'd become unhappy,so i thought maybe i buy a female friend for him,so i did, within a day he and his new friend seemed so happy, doing everything together.Great i thought,so good to see them happy together, but then after 2 weeks i found him dead,no sign of why he'd died,

I left the female bird without a partner for a while, she didn't seem to mind but i kept thinking maybe better she has a new friend again,so 2 weeks ago i bought a new male friend for her, same again they seemed so happy, but now today he's dead just like the other one.

So now i'm wondering why??? and would like to ask if anyone knows if it is because somehow there not compatible at times or the female is some kinda sadist bird.Certainly weird this has happened again, any ideas????? thanks.....

:D sadist? That's really funny, I got an image of the lady lovebird shagging the man to death. Tobe serious, our next door neighbours had two, one died (not sure of the sex) and as they didn't want to have the situation where one pops off before the other, they chose not to replace it. All they did was put a mirror in the cage and the remaining bird has lived quite happily (as far as caged birds can) with just its reflection for company. I'd try that before I went out and got another - who could very well meet the same fate. Death by knobbing :o

Love birds believe it or not are very short lived bird, about 3 to 4 years average, and they like lots of room, it is very stressful to keep the in budgie or cockatiel cages. once they are in mature plumage it is very hard to tell their age, until 18 months ago I had 30 pairs of breeding lovebirds both Agapornis Fischeri and Agapornis personata (Black masks and Peachfaces) in all colours from white to nearly black ,they are very active birds and contrary to belief do not eat a lot of seed the main bulk of their diet is fresh soft barked twigs and branches, gum tip and young palms whichthey will totally devour, and soft keimed oats and millet, fresh vegies such as Broccoli or in the husk corn on the cob, but never just a seed diet that just shortens their life span, get a group of 1 male and 3 females and enjoy the activity , kept properly they provide years of entertainment for young and old never keep a single lovebird it is so cruel :o Nignoy
