Law enforcement officers of the Bang Khun Thian Police Station arrested a notorious taxi driver accused of stealing from passengers while they were asleep. The most recent victim, a Japanese businessman, was relieved to have his stolen property returned and praised the police's quick action.

On June 13, Police Captain Paiyap Sombun, Bang Khun Thian Station Chief, led the operation to apprehend Sirichai, a 45-year-old taxi driver, reported Daily News.

The suspect was charged with theft and receiving stolen goods, including a Rolex watch valued at 1 million baht, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, a MacBook, and a credit card. The total value of the stolen items was over 1.2 million baht. Sirichai was caught in a condo in the Ekachai, Bang Bon area of Bangkok.

The incident occurred late on the night of June 8. Sirichai had picked up Mr. Nammo Hiroshi, a 40-year-old Japanese businessman, after an evening out in the Asoke area. Seeing that Hiroshi had fallen sound asleep in his taxi, Sirichai seized the opportunity to rob him. Later, the accused used the stolen credit card twice in Bang Khun Thian, which led the authorities to his location.

Upon hearing the news, Mr. Nammo travelled to Bang Khun Thian police station to retrieve his belongings. He thanked the police for their swift action and was visibly relieved. Despite the unsettling incident, Nammo confirmed he would return to Thailand for future visits.

Upon interrogation, Sirichai confessed to pawning the stolen watch for 25,000 baht to cover daily expenses. His criminal history revealed past drug offenses dating back to 2012 and 2015. The suspect is currently under custody as further legal proceedings are carried out.

I wonder how many other criminals are driving taxis. Not including those we already know of in Phuket, of course.
