Hotels in Bangkok want the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to postpone its plan to charge hotels for waste water treatment, claiming that most of them are not financially ready after having just recovered from three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, president of the Thai Hotels Association.

The BMA plans to charge 8 baht per cubic metre of waste water discharged into the drainage system from commercial buildings, including hotels, which use more than 2,000 cubic metres of water per month. The BMA estimates that 80% of the tap water consumed by commercial buildings are discharged as waste into the drainage system.

Marisa said that hotels are now shouldering increasing operational costs, such as for electricity, cooking gas, wages, bank interest rates and land taxes.

Hi,

Of course, they’re going to say that.. They can’t say “we don’t want it” because that puts them on the wrong side of what really is becoming a one-sided environmental position … no company wants to be seen as being anti-environment..….

So… by saying “not now/not yet” they can still claim they support environmentally friendly policies,  but at the same time, also try to dodge the costs that may come with it.

Wouldn't hotel waste been significantly reduced during the pandemic due to high vacancies, thus reducing their operation costs (unless not metered but charged a flat rate)? Yet, decrease in total income means they kept more of the income before expenses.

So now with increasing occupancy, they want to continue as if it were still the pandemic? Maybe it's time the hotel industry start thinking of reducing for themselves what will once again become a major cost without charity from the government.
