Thailand seeks help from MRC over rising water level in Mekong River

Thailand is seeking help from the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to get China and Laos to manage the discharge of water downstream from their dams properly, as the rising level of the Mekong River is threatening to flood Thailand’s eight riparian provinces.

Surasee Kittimongkol, secretary-general of Thailand’s National Water Resources Office, said today (Friday) that the water level in the Mekong is rising due to accumulated water from heavy rain in the lower Mekong and northern Laos.

Compounded by heavy rain in Thailand’s north and northeast, due to the influence of a low pressure cell prevailing over northern Vietnam and southern China, he said that the level of water in lower Mekong River will increase steadily.

That is true. Is a problem now upstream dams are need to release unusual increse of water that before was less. Short thinking has allow many to use river bed like new land that now is to be wash away. Not only Thailand. MRC  is only another Asian food bowl for a few anyway. Not to see yet a way to control weather !

They were, but now China is experiencing heavy rainfall and serious flooding it's letting it go south.

Would Thailand prefer the excess rain water to remain in China and Laos so they can suffer flooding rather than letting the river do the job it has done since the year dot?

I remember this too, I think it was 3 years ago.

Wasn't too long ago that this was the case......accepting the ebbs and flows of the great river without human-induced political intervention.

could use some of that rain here, rayong... dry as can be

Yes, I topped the pool up with a hose pipe yesterday so it should be along soon!

Live on the banks of the Mekong and was caught by surprise this year because I wasn't following the flooding in China.  We have had a mild rainy season especially when compared to last years torrential rains.  The huge river is the highest I've experienced and the water is moving fast.

Don't think they had massive dams in year dot.  These dams can be extremely deadly and destructive under the wrong set of circumstances.
