The Thai Rice Packers Association has announced a 3 baht/kg price increase for packed rice, to 20 baht/kg, effective in September, citing increased production costs.

 

The association’s president, Yongyut Phurkmahadamrong, admitted that the price increase of packed rice will affect most consumers, but said that the adjustment is necessary.

 

He said the Internal Trade Department may, however, consider producing Blue Flag packed rice, for sale at a lower price to help the consumers.

Maybe a bit, but most will go to layers of middlemen.

But for the record, if prices increase on virtually everything it's not a stretch to believe that affects the packaging companies too. Everybody but the middlemen have increases in operating cost.

Some of the food I buy here is between 50% and 100% up in price. But yes, I'm just a foreigner, so who cares... Also, my point was that people who borrow a lot of money from money lenders, or banks, to pay for a new car or smartphone probably have other problems than 3 baht per kilo of rice...

India has banned the export of rice and Vietnam has announced its intention to drastically reduce rice production by 44% on the basis that the product is too water intensive.

It's an emotive product due to its place in the history of many countries especially Japan.

Will be interesting to see how each country adapts

You missed out that the reduction is not immediate and is aimed at 2030 and that the environment is NOT the primary reason!

I suggest they are hooking the climate change agenda to their financial decision to try and give it some "legitimacy!

 

The move is aimed at “boosting the exports of high-quality rice, ensuring domestic food security, protecting the environment and adapting to climate change,” according to the government document, dated May 26 and reviewed by Reuters.
