The Political Theatre of a PM Vote: A Play in Three Acts

Featured Replies

It feels like an unfathomably long time ago, but Thailand had an election on May 14 that has yet to produce a new prime minister and government.

For many Thais, this has felt like an extended piece of political theatre — each step in equal parts numbingly predictable for any keen observer of Thai politics, but also breathtakingly surprising as they materialized, for the norms of two decades that they seemed to shatter.

In this piece, we recap the events leading up to what promises to be a highly eventful week in Thai politics and map out how the final part of this political script may play out.

The norm since 1932 has been rule by the elitist/royalist/military (aka Deep State) contrary to democratic electorate aspirations. The 2023 election in practicality didn't shatter anything other than blemish the facade of a democratic nation.
