Joe Biden on Tuesday pledged unflinching support for Israel, calling the assault by Hamas militants that left nearly 1,000 people dead an “act of sheer evil” and confirming that some US citizens are part of the many currently being held hostage.

In a televised speech from the White House, the US president said at least 14 Americans were killed in last weekend’s attack by Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, and a yet unknown number of Americans are being held hostage.

The attack saw gunmen crossing the border from Gaza, raiding Israeli cities and gunning down civilians in their homes, cars and at a desert music festival. As many as 150 hostages are believed to have been taken. More than 900 people in Gaza have been killed in retaliatory Israeli airstrikes while enforcing a “blockade” that sealed off the besieged territory of 2.3 million people from food, fuel and other supplies.

Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, later told reporters that “20 or more Americans” were unaccounted for following the weekend violence, though the number held captive by Hamas remains unclear. He said the US government was in regular contact with the families of the missing, some of whom have made public pleas to US and Israeli authorities for help locating their loved ones.

“In this moment, we must be crystal clear: we stand with Israel,” Biden, flanked by vice-president Kamala Harris and US secretary of state Antony Blinken, said in a forceful speech, repeating: “We stand with Israel.”

In a show of solidarity with Israel, the state department announced on Tuesday that Blinken will travel to Israel in the coming days.

In his remarks from the White House State Dining Room, Biden was unequivocal in his condemnation of Hamas, calling it a terrorist organization whose “state purpose is the annihilation of the state of Israel and the murder of Jewish people”.

“Hamas does not stand for the Palestinian people’s right to dignity and self-determination,” he added, echoing the sentiment expressed in a rare joint statement by the leaders of the US, UK, France, Germany and Italy on Monday night.

Yet, all the six billion he 'freed up' for the hostages was only for humanitarian needs and it all is still in the Doha bank unspent.

It is commendable that you respect self-accountability for Biden but it seems you do not so much for Trump.

Nevertheless, your messiah will be held accountable for his actions.

He has sown many crimes and will soon reap a substantial crop of jail time from his 91 felony indictments.

When you give people money for groceries, they are free to spend the money they would have spent on groceries on something else.

It's not really that complex.

He freed up the money that paid for this... like a typical liberal he has no self accountability for his actions... you reap what you sow comes to mind... "but, but, but" Iran would never do this... they said they wouldn't and I believed them... what a fool

Let's not forget all the weapons and whatnot left behind in Afghanistan.

Yes, he exaggerated the value of his property to get a loan, oh the humanity! And why is the bank he colluded with for the loan not being charged as well? It's not like they take your word for it when you loan you money.

Biden flushed Afghanistan down the toilet and now he'll flush Israel down the toilet, the border is open, the economy stinks, yet Joe and his family are all getting rich.

The groceries will be paid for by the Doha Bank.

'It's not really that complex'!

Various reports assess the attack was planned long ago - months, a year, maybe longer. Same goes for training. The funds you're on about would have been irrelevant. Either way, it would not have cost anywhere near that sum. If to be extravagant $20-25 million, probably much less. Peanuts for Iran on a slow day, manageable for Hamas without foreign aid, even.

Where is the evidence that the bank colluded with him and committed a crime?

Interest rates on loans are governed by risk and Trump defrauded the bank of higher repayments for a higher interest rate with his false valuations.

Biden is not responsible for world poverty?

If biden cares so much about American citizens why is he apparently ignoring the Palestinian Americans trapped in Gaza, and not trying to get them out?

Different story with israeli Americans.

Egyptian officials said the southern Rafah crossing would open later Saturday for the first time in days to allow foreigners out.

According to Al Jazeera that didn't happen.

He's not ignoring them. There are links posted on at least one the parallel topic discussing negotiations between the USA, Egypt and Israel to that effect. Israel borders were not closed, commercial flights to the USA available. More nonsense and misinformation out of you.

Biden must realise that supporting israel unconditionally may not come across well in an election cycle, as he is now walking back his support. Reportedly saying israel should not occupy Gaza, and apparently wanting a "path to a homeland" or words to that effect.

Bit cheeky though as the US has been complicit in not achieving that in the past 30 years.

Meanwhile, in New York

Friday evening hundreds of New Yorkers gathered in Brooklyn in solidarity against Israel's offensive -- which has killed more than 2,200 Palestinians -- wielding a banner emblazoned with the message "Jews Say Stop Genocide Against Palestinians."

Seems biden is no longer in lockstep with netanyahu, but I wonder what Satterfield is able to do to stop the slaughter? I fear very little if anything.

President Biden has appointed former Ambassador David Satterfield as the Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues. Special Envoy Satterfield will lead U.S. diplomacy to urgently address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including work to facilitate the provision of life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable people and promote the safety of civilians, in coordination with the United Nations and U.S. partners.
