Disappointment in Srettha’s Putin Phuket invitation

In the unfolding global panorama, the canvas of diplomacy is stained with exigencies often superseding moral imperatives. Yet, for emerging democracies, the latter should not be shrouded in realpolitik engagements.

The recent diplomatic rendezvous of Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin with Russian President Vladimir Putin and subsequent engagements in Beijing delineates a concerning trajectory for a nation that has freshly emerged from the shadows of a military junta.

The meeting, held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse before a dinner reception hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, marked the first interaction between Prime Minister Srettha and President Putin. Alongside over 130 leaders congregating for the international forum on Belt and Road Initiative, this meeting was not merely a casual diplomatic courtesy but a stance echoing Thailand’s international affiliations.

The disconcerting part of this rendezvous doesn’t stem from the realms of diplomacy but from the underlying message it sends amidst a turbulent global human rights landscape. Russia’s ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine and China’s alleged concentration camps in Xinjiang are not mere ripples in the international community but a tempest questioning the global human rights ethos.

They should perhaps protest against him.... something they cannot get away with back in Russia....(maybe not in Thailand too).

I think Ayatollah Khamane'i of Iran would not mind a mango smoothie and a massage while lounging at a resort in Phuket.

Not anymore.

No Russia, China, America, and many more.

Would that be overall good for Thailand? I don't think so.

And then there is the argument that to improve relations and behavior people have to talk to each other.

Pictures will be taken, facial recognition, etc . . .

And then there's the army of security for Vlad, "Hey Alexi!  Remember me?  I'm your brother-in-law!  My sister, she is looking for you!  Come with me now, I give you free trip back home with me."

Thailand is a small trading nation dependent on relationship with major powers. Neutrality and non-alignment are foreign policies adopted by all Asean countries.

I checked - Thailand is a signatory to the Rome Statute of the ICC.

Sometimes selling your own grannie for a few Baht will backfire who next for an invite Mr. Kim? 🤔

Is it a thing that judo 'black belts' shave their legs? I think not.

He is doing what's best for Thailand. Putin was also invited by Indonesia for the G20 gathering. Much in line with Asean approach to foreign power relationship. Uncomfortable but practical considering the Russian tourist revenues.

This is true. Thoughts on geopolitics differ greatly depending where you are born or live. Still, it hurts the heart to see the Thai Gov. embrace a ruthless dictator. Then again, what is happening in Myanmar does not seem to bother them either. oiiii.

Resignation would be best for Thailand now. whatever the motive lines have been crossed is the way most of the world will see it.

It's part of Thai culture to extend invitations with no expectation the invite will actually result in someone showing up.

"...exigencies often superseding moral imperatives." Yeah, that always trips me up....

"....a nation that has freshly emerged from the shadows of a military junta." sez who?

The last junta government has rescinded the ratification to the Rome Statute of the ICC in 2012 to prevent ICC investigation of military atrocities against civilians.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted an invitation to visit Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin wrote in a social media post, a day after the country announced an extension of the visa-exempt stay period for Russian tourists by two months.

Thailand’s new PM made the announcement on Tuesday after meeting with Putin in Beijing where he extended the invitation to the Russian leader, who faces an international arrest warrant on the world stage over alleged war crimes through the conduct of his war in Ukraine.

“I invited [Putin] to visit Thailand, and he nodded in appreciation, saying ‘Thank you’ in Thai. This shows that he has a good familiarity with our country,” Srettha said on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. He noted that Putin has visited the Thai tourist town of Phuket several times.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Third Belt and Road Forum meeting, which China is hosting.
