From Wednesday, Chiang Mai International Airport will operate 24 hours a day. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has confirmed the facility has been given the green light to operate around the clock, in a bid to boost tourism and the local economy.

It’s understood that the extended hours are an order from PM Srettha Thavisin and are being put in place to accommodate demand. Tourism operators are expecting an increase in visitor numbers, due to both the year-end peak season and the temporary visa-free entry granted to Chinese and Kazakh tourists.

According to the revised hours policy from Airports of Thailand, the airport will change from operating between 6am and midnight to operating 24 hours a day. The first flight to depart during the extended hours will be a Thai Vietjet flight to Osaka in Japan, which is scheduled to take off from Chiang Mai at 12.30am.

Hang Dong residents will not be happy about this .

Yes indeed, but also the residents to the north of the airport in the densely populated areas, including many tourist hotels, under the flight take-off path - engines at full throttle!

Local residents protest Chiang Mai airport’s 24/7 plans

From tomorrow, Chiang Mai International Airport plans to operate around the clock – but not everyone’s happy about it. Residents from the nearby sub-district of Mae Hia are protesting the extended hours, saying many are still waiting to be compensated for damage caused by flights landing and taking off over the last 5 years.

More flights heading over their properties at all hours of the day and night won’t help their situation either.

Meena Chankaew, President of the Nimman Noradee Neighbourhood, says many homes adjacent to the airport have been affected by arriving and departing flights and residents plan to petition the Administrative Court to stop the 24/7 operations that are slated to begin tomorrow.

This needs to be settled first.

Going forward, a special airport district should be created whereby nearby impacted communities (TBD) will receive an annual percentage of airport net revenues reflected by extended operations without delays.

Good luck with the petition against what the gov sees as more tourist $'s!

As much chance as seeing the upcoming smog season being addressed by government.

I do see the need for two more committees though!

Do committee members still get 10k a pop per meeting+ expenses ?
