THE FAMOUS DEPUTY POLICE chief Pol.Gen. Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn has been lambasted and ridiculed online for staging an act of excessive subservience to Potjaman na Pombejra, former spouse of de facto Pheu Thai boss/”sickly” inmate Thaksin Shinawatra.

 

During yesterday’s ceremony for a mass walk-run-bicycle activity at Sanam Luang ground, the deputy police chief literally knelt before the seated Podjaman, mother of newly-named Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra who was looking on.

 

The scene circulated online has drawn much criticism from viewers who expressed bewilderment at the submissive Surachate paying personal respect to the de facto Pheu Thai boss’s former spouse.

 

The deputy police chief was said to have been so inspired to finally rise as police chief that he offered to display such an excessive subservient gesture.

I, personally, had never any doubts about this. They are just playing the 'long and careful game'. Thaksin family firmly established as one of the few owning almost everything, and ruling Thailand like their fiefdom forever... Typical feudalistic playbook.

Showing outmost respect for Thaksin's ex-wife, and mother to Thailands future PM, I say this was a genius action. 

 

He knows where the real power is, so he act accordingly.

Its not what you know, its who you know

Not surprising really, Thai society is feudal in nature, a wise man knows which side of the bread has butter on it. Hedging your bets within the heady world of hi-so's has tactical advantages and avoids unpleasant surprises, bending the knee costs nothing. Yes, we are witnessing a political farce but the  play must go on to ensure stability, everybody knows what's going on here but the audience expects a full performance with no cliff hangers, disaster awaits anyone going off script.

Potjeman's father was a former national police chief who was very powerful and influential.  He gave Thaksin his start in business by giving him a monopoly on police pagers. He was Big Joke's patron back when BJ was just starting out.  I'm sure that he already knows Potjeman well and is simply reaffirming his loyalty.

Perscriptions for glasses are not that expensive in Thailand, I would recommend you pay a visit, this will allow you to tell the difference between mother and daughter. In the interim, the mother is the one returning the wai.
