My local Makro doesn't sell alcohol as there is a university about 300 metres away, but the 7 Eleven directly opposite the uni sells.

Barking mad isn't it. In my local Lotus'ssssssss there is a sign on the alcohol section that outside the hours of 11 to 2 you cannot buy a case of beer. You CAN however buy beer as long as it exceeds 10 litres....work that one out. Also, there is a warehouse shop called The One in town where you can buy any type of alcohol in any amount, at any time, and they open at 8 in the morning......:w00t:

  • What is it with Thailand and their obsession with micro managing opening hours for places that sell alcohol.  I don't care about drinking after midnight normally, but for certain sporting events I do

  • Why is the Prime Minister / Finance Minister even involved with such a decision?   Is he micro managing everything that happens in all branches of government?

"..........in reality, many pubs and bars have been operating beyond the 2am closing time illegally"

Then get the RTP to do the job they're paid to do and CLOSE THEM DOWN - or is there some reason why the RTP allow them to continue to operate illegally? Hmmm?

I trust that was sarcasm

Find a wholesale shop if thirsty 2-5pm. Never again need 7/12, Makro, retail etc.

Buy a pack, heaps cheaper.

Plenty in the cities  towns & villages. 🙃🙃

Operating illegally so lets change the laws to make it legal.

What's next, murder is illegal so lets change the laws so it doesn't happen any more and thereby stop the tarnishing of Thailand's good name / reputation.

The bars staying open until 0400hrs who are the tourists they are hoping  to attract

guys like myself in the 80s - 90s  working in the Middle East

Not to many around  these days

Most families  will be in  bed

Same  as the old ex-pats

Plus people will go out later in the evening  but to sit in a bar until 0400hrs 😱

Where there is a BG you will likely find a tourist.🙃🙃

I guess I'll give up drinking. Nothing good happens in bars after midnight.

where is the accountability of the previous regime?

Accountability?? Was that not mostly the Military Academy educated soldiers with a similar IQ to a Somchai in the street?

In the former soldier governments offshore accounts.

Really doesn't affect me that much.  I don't hit the bar areas that much anymore and when I do I'm on the Skytrain before midnight to take me home.

Thailand with its notorious air pollution - now to become a noise polluted destination??

Cue double-glazing sales boom ^_^

Guess I'd rather have the drunks hit the road at 0400 than at 0200

BS. Even in Western countries there's laws that restrict opening hours for bars, and the Thai PM is a  lawmaker.

Yes there are laws in western countries, but there are also caveats, for certain extensions to opening hours, music events etc etc.

Thailand will have the usual free-for-all like the cannabis fiasco.

The police and the brown evelope will become less now to bar owners. At the moment in cnx the police are forcing bars to close at midnight because they know in the new year the rules are changing But it is a good thing that the opening hrs will increase for the bar owners and the people who work in them.If the bar is quite then they will close early so not all bars will remain open

Selling alcohol outside of an arbitrary time period that even if enforced does not actually prevent people from drinking at those times if they have stocked up prior is not really equivalent to murder now is it?

Stupid and pointless laws are broken every single day by vast numbers of people and if they are not enforced, they should not really be laws.  The drinking between 2-5pm is a fine example of a pointless, unenforced law that should be taken off the books so that those that do have to abide by this stupid law are not penalised for doing so.

In another bizarre turnaround by the government, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said allowing pubs, bars, and clubs to remain open until 4 a.m. does not necessarily mean an extension of drinking hours.

He explained that extending the opening hours without extending the drinking hours would enable people to sit and socialize for a longer duration.

Anutin also said non-alcoholic beverages can still be served, and other services will remain operational for extended periods, potentially leading to the creation of more job opportunities.

Comment from a falang bar owner of my acquaintance "Why bother. all my customers have had enough and gone by midnight"

Exactly, they should be on trial, their passports should be revoked, they should be in a jail cell awaiting trial, and if not held accountable by the Thai people how about the Hague? They committed countless crimes against the Thai people.

His Master's in the army nearly destroyed the tourism industry, and deliberately decimated the nightlife, so that they could remake Thailand in their own image of (fake) purity and sanctification. Now that income is way down and tourism is way down, they are making a desperate attempt to rebuild the nightlife they sabotaged.

Where is the vision?

Where is the common sense?

Where is the reason?

Where is the ability to lead?

Chinese won't be in night clubs, only drunks, and undesirables, Chinese will be in casino's when they build them. Nieghborhood  shop bar's usually close early, but there's a few converted houses that won't be popular with happy birthdays blasting out at 4am. 7 days a week.

Bar girls will need to take something to keep them awake, dope shops, casino's open all hour's, what a circus. There is no vision, but some will make money from it, expect to find more people waking up robbed with no memory of how it happened.

Merry Christmas.

There is no vision. Never has a truer statement ever been uttered about the leadership in Thailand.

I expect to read many more news reports like this, after Dec 15th.

Russian Man Causes Multiple-Motorcycle Collision Late Night in Pattaya, Refuses Alcohol Test and Tries to Escape

Bar owners reaction so far, hasn't been overly positive.

Bar staff has not been promised increase in salary for extended working hours.

Single tourists had their fill long before 2am, usually midnight, and priority #1 is to go home for boom-boom.

This will not create more income for business owners, or the country. Just another dream.

However, the many negative effects will soon hit the news, frequently.

Glad I don't live near any.
