In a rigorous social order enforcement operation titled "Clear Skies Chiang Rai," local authorities have cracked down on illicit karaoke establishments implicated in prostitution, rescuing three minors, including girls aged 13 and 16.

On November 7, 2023, Phuttiphong Sirimat, the governor of Chiang Rai, acted on a complaint lodged by an anti-human trafficking NGO regarding the Labh Karaoke Bar in Huay Sak sub-district, reported Thai Rath.

The venue was accused of operating without a license, selling alcohol past permitted hours, and involving minors in the sex trade. A provincial security officer, a senior district official, and the Chiang Rai police conducted undercover operations leading to the apprehension of a 16-year-old girl being delivered to a hotel.

Subsequent investigations at the karaoke bar revealed the presence of five service girls engaging in merriment with clients. Among them were two underage girls, one 16-year-old and one shockingly as young as 13, serving patrons.

Authorities detained the 52-year-old establishment owner, Pongsri Naokaeo, and 38-year-old Bancha Chumsri, initiating charges for operating without a license, encouraging or consenting to inappropriate behavior by minors, employing minors without notification to labor inspectors, and trafficking humans.

The rescued victims have been entrusted to Chiang Rai's social welfare department for appropriate care and assistance.
