Sitthichote Intharawiset Appointed New Election Commissioner

BANGKOK (NNT) - Senior Supreme Court Judge Sitthichote Intharawiset has been appointed as the new election commissioner, replacing Chatchai Janprasri who retired in June. The Senate confirmed his appointment with a vote of 175 to 16, with eight abstentions.

 

Previously the chairman of the Supreme Court’s election cases section, Sitthichote was nominated for the Election Commission (EC) role following Chatchai’s retirement. The law mandates that one EC seat is reserved for a Supreme Court member, necessitating this appointment.

 

In the nomination process, Sitthichote was considered alongside Deputy Supreme Court President Sitthisak Wanachakij. Both candidates were deemed qualified for the election commissioner role. Sitthichote was ultimately chosen by the Supreme Court with 139 votes out of 176 judges, while Sitthisak received 26 votes.
