Entrance fees for famous Tham Luang cave explained

The admission fees, Bt950 for Thais and Bt1,000 for foreigners, to enter the world-famous Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province have been criticised as expensive, but are set for operational and safety reasons, according to Chutidet Kamonchanut, director of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation’s Chiang Rai office.

 

He said today that the fees were set at the recommendation of experts, because the cave is considered a ‘special area,’ especially chambers 2 and 3.

 

There is no, however, charge to visit chamber 1, which is at a depth of around 200 meters, Chutidet said.

park officials defended charging Thais 950 baht and foreigners 1,500 baht per visit as appropriate because this covers going through chambers two and three, Amarin TV said this afternoon (Dec. 18).

 

Even their story here quotes 

 

Park administrators today explained that the 950 baht fee for Thais and 1,500 baht for foreigners is for touring chambers two and three which must be supervised by officials and requires additional equipment.

The gouging continues... cannot see many families going there at those prices.

Why were the fees set at 50% higher for foreigners? Do they need extra supervision and equipment?

 

I, for one, will not be visiting, as I am not confident that sufficient safety measures will be implemented to mitigate the risks, having seen what passes for H and S in Thailand.

It's not higher for foreigners!

It should be double for Thais, it was they themselves who got stuck in there and foreigners that got them out.

 

I wouldn't pay 200 baht for this ' gouging of cash from the public '

I was there last year and couldn’t find the entrance even with directions. A lot of nasty baboons there and some fighting….everybody given a substantial stick to protect themselves. A family of four 6,000 baht……ridiculous……it’s a cave people. Many more interesting caves across the world for less money.

Because most foreigners does not pay tax in Thailand. Foreigners with Work permit or Pink ID card should pay Thai Price. I know that at some places they refuse to give Thai price anyway.

Most Thais don't pay tax in Thailand either. The Thai government is not financed by private individuals income tax.

One reason is that so many Thai does not earn enough money to come up to the cap where they start to pay taxes. The cap is 150,000 baht/year after deductions and allowances. Meaning that most people that earn less than 240,000 yearly (20,000 monthly) do not have to pay taxes.

Dual pricing as usual again, never ends.. The excuse it pathetic as well, any visitor should get the same safety and guides.

I doubt the target is families, they only have space for 2 groups daily with 10 people each.
