ICT website defaced by hacker

BANGKOK: -- The Information and Communications Technology Ministry's website was defaced by a hacker who put a smiling picture of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on it.

The animated picture of Thaksin was imposed on black background, showing him smiling and waving.

The homepage also displayed "take back your dictatorship and return our Thailand" beside Thaksin's picture.

The picture displayed at about 11:50 am and lasted about ten minutes before the page was removed.

The site was out of service temporarily before it went online again at 2 pm.

Speaking of Mr. Smiles. My wife just came back form our old Soi in Bangkok with a rather disturbing rumor about someone and his family being house guests of the former in London. It's the type of rumor that she will only whisper behind closed doors.

I daresay one is best advised not to speak of Soi dog (most often from the bitches) rumors aloud or out in the open as that could lead you to a serious loss of face when rumor is proved to be false. There is significantly less loss of face to said female dogs if whispered behind closed doors after rumor is proven false as such rumor mongering is one of the raisons d'être in a soi dogs life.

Hackers insert Thaksin portrait in Thai govt website

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has traced and identified unnamed hackers who violated the ministry's website despite a new law just enforced to counter cyber crimes, according to the Ministry spokesman.

The hackers had inserted pictures of both ex-premier Thaksin and coup leader Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, chairman of the Council for National Security, on the main page of the ICT ministry's www.mict.go.th website.

The intruders also added criticisms of the military junta and the recently-drafted Constitution.

The cyber raids occurred one day after a new law was enforced to combat cyber crimes considered detrimental to national security, the monarchy, against medical ethics or pornographic.

Ministry spokesman Wissanu Meeyu said the authorities had traced three unidentified computer hackers but declined to tell if they were within the country or overseas.

However, the ministry planned to ask police Friday to take legal action against the hackers who might face a maximum five-year jail term or a maximum fine of Bt100,000, or both.

Mr. Wissanu admitted the ministry's website security was not state-of-the-art and is to be enhanced shortly.

Hacker defaces ICT Ministry homepage

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (กระทรวงเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศและการสื่อสาร ) reports that malicious parties have hacked into its website in order to post images of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra (ทักษิณ ชินวัตร).

Officials are coordinating with law enforcement officers in expediting investigations.

The ICT Ministry's homepage has since been restored to its original settings. The Minister of Information and Communication Technology Mr. Sitthichai Pokai-udom (สิทธิชัย โภไคยอุดม) affirms that the parties responsible for the incident are a threat to national security and will face criminal charges.

anyone think that they'll find the 'culprits' in the 2 day time table the IT Minister has ordered?...

think they'll find them at all?

or (conspiracy theory) it's an inside job just to put one case up on the books for their new cyber crime law?

I'm wonder many times why some (or many?) of the (so titeled) Expats still here in Thailand?!

Comments like the above I wouldn't do but I would leave such places as soon as possible!

To living in an "uneducated joke of a country" isn't something I ever would be able to do more than a few month! But 21 years? And than "over 50 million baht" just to "chang see khao"? WOW!

What is it what keeps you so long in an country like the one you titeled "uneducated joke of a country"?

In countries like China you wouldn't post such comments because you'll find yourself faster behind bars as you're able to think!

I've learned a lesson many years ago, not in Thailand but in Hongkong and Singapore but this lesson applies to all countries other than the Home-Country: "Doesn't matter how long you're in an foreign Country, you will be a guest, nothing more! And you should never forget that you're just a guest! And YOU need to live with this Country and NOT the Country with you!"

Nothing against any critics as long as that critic is fundamental, not personal and on an normal level!

Hackers of the ICT are possibly Thais in Germany : DSI

Fri, July 20, 2007 : Last updated 17:26 pm

It is believed that hackers who broke into the Information and Communications Technology Ministry's website on Thursday may be Thais in Germany, a Department of Special Investigation police said Friday.

"Our investigation showed that the hackers are staying in Europe. At this stage, we believed they may be Thais living in Germany," Pol Col Yannaphon Yangyuen, chief of DSI's technology and information section said.

Good luck to the Junta in persuading the EU to extradite... I can just see it now in the European Court of Human Rights:

"Your Honour - we must imprison those who protest against a Military Dictatorship" :o

From my own point of view - I'm here because I pay less tax by living here (and the weather's a lot better than London). :o

As for the never being more than a guest - that's very much an Asian thing, so yes I'd believe it of Singapore and Hong Kong.

I'll admit it's not just Asia though - i.e. Germany doesn't give nationality easily, but if you live in countries like the US, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Sweden, etc. - you can get nationality a lot more easily (hence the increased difficulty in getting a visa to live there in the first place), especially if you speak the language.

i.e. A Thai married to a UK National can get permanent resident status in 2 years, passing a relatively easy test, and UK nationality in 5. In Thailand, the same married couple, it would take 5 years before the Brit could even apply for PR (and then, only if paying sufficient tax, and it's not as simple a test).

Have you ever clicked around on government websites? Some pages look like school projects with animated trains and teddy bears that have absolutely nothing to do with the content, others contain dead links, and each ministry has it's own design and look, all the colours of the rainbow. As usual, more emphasis is put on presentation, content comes second. Then it really makes you wonder about security awhen government websites are developed under dozens of different projects instead of one uniform e-government project.

One could write the ICT ministry about it but the boss even recently admitted to not looking at his email. :o

Had a good laugh looking through those, thanks Tony. Looks like some govt. employees kid designed those on a lunch-break. :D

Pretty much Thailand all over; nowhere near mastering a technology or discipline, yet always prepared to mess it up; censor it; or twist it to suit as required to some f%ckwit's mickey mouse agenda.

Not meaning to be pedantic, but technically its four years before you can apply for PR in Thailand

One year on a Non Imm Multi, and three consecutive one year extensions. The Tax issue doesn't really enter into it as many retired expats have PR and pay no tax at all. :o

Not meaning to be pedantic and briefly, because off topic, tax issue does enter into it.Any retired expat with PR will have obtained that status while validly working and will have had to demonstrate appropriate tax record.Without that background retired expats can't obtain PR.

I can introduce you to a few expats that have PR, who have never worked a single day or payed tax in Thailand, but of course I don't know exactly how much was in the envelope, or who may have supported the applications. :o

Your reference to "how much was in the envelope" suggests to me you may not understand how the system works. It's possible, though unlikely, your friends who have PR may have acquired their status through BOI investment, approx Bt 10m through government securities or purchase of condo.Otherwise they will have had to show their tax record, even those applying on a supporting Thai family basis. My guess is that those who claim to have obtained PR outside the normal framework are being economical with the truth. It may amaze the cynics but the PR process is administered transparently and honestly.

These hackers should not be pursued to punish them, they should be offered employment.

Offered employment doing what? Their own design for MICT was as amateurish as any legal government site.

Securitywise they were not very clever either unless there's some serious hack work has been left unreported.

Mr. Blam,

I have only been living in Thailand for about a year, but I have been visiting Thailand from Hong Kong for a long long time. Thailand really has changed, hasn't it? Thailand has gone in a very very bad direction since Shinawatra took over. Corruption seems to be far worse, and the Thais seem to have adopted the Shinawatra ("I am a professional liar and you have to live with it") attitude of xenophobia and condescension... down to anything not Thai.

I have a baby in Thailand now, and so I am living here. It is not anything like it was 10 years ago, I agree. And, the education system is turning out juvenile deliquents just as fast as it can. Where will Thailand be in another 21 years? Far worse off I can imagine.

'Chang see khao' mean "White Elephant", yes? You have been feeding the white elephant for 21 years Mr. Blam? I see that correctly?

Good luck to you, Mr. Blam, you have someone here that understands your frustration. The Internet, the Thai websites, the superior attitude with unprofessional training. it previews just a very sloppy country going nowhere. A country without portfolio. Mickey Mouse is just about right. Now, I realise, I have to close my eyes, close my mind, close my heart, and suffer along with you. :o
