BANGKOK (NNT) - A magnitude-7.6 earthquake off Japan’s Noto Peninsula has resulted in at least 13 deaths and numerous injuries. The quake struck on Monday (Dec 1), toppling buildings and igniting a fire in Wajima, one of the most affected areas. Eight fatalities were reported in Wajima, with five more in nearby regions.

The disaster disrupted essential services, including trains and mobile networks. Around 33,000 households faced power outages, and water supply issues were reported. Significant structural damage was visible, with cracked streets and collapsed buildings.

In response, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida set up a task force for rescue and recovery operations. Emperor Naruhito canceled a public New Year appearance in Tokyo in light of the tragedy.

The earthquake also affected several power plants. At the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, water overflowed from fuel pools, but no radiation leakage was detected. Thermal power plants in the region also halted operations, with a loss of about 1.2 gigawatts of capacity.

For Thai nationals impacted by the disaster, assistance is available through the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo via their hotline at +8190-4435-7812.

As long as Thais are fine that's okay... How about instructing their relevant agencies to help anyone?

Not even a mention of condolences or a donation, offering assistance however small, to help the poor air crew on board the coastguard vessel.

The Thais are OK, well that's great then.

I think we can trust the Japanese to take care of everybody, as is humanly possible, without any Thai interference. Hospitals if necessary won't be ripping Thais off as they do with Falang here.

I agree with you,

But making at least a token gesture would have been polite.

Thailand is quick enough off the mark requesting aid for projects from Japan.

So many houses have those heavy cement tiles on their roofs, which is likely why a lot of them collapsed.

I am glad that the country of Japan was prepared to deal with eqrthquakes. It will still take time for roadways

to get rebuilt and to help isolated places quickly. Good thing that Japan has lots of helicopters to use.
