Popular Post bkk6060
Pretty crappy. An embarassment really. I know some Thais who have worked in factories the best thing about it they have said is OT is usually plentiful. Work a lot of hours and they can make 15k + a month. Still, a lousy wage but at least livable. 2 3

Not too bad for a six day week. 4

We paid Christmas and New year's bonuses, annual leave and correct monthly days off, advances of wages when they were short, paid the government their dues in required taxes and social security (it was checked with foreign owned establishments but not so much with Thai owned ones). However, there would still be foreigners asking staff members their salary and then reacting with scorn and sarcasm, then winding the staff up by stating slave labour by the management. We paid over the going rate and staff seldom left us. There was a happy work environment. It was these same foreigners moaning and up in arms and searching high and low around Pattaya for better deals, when we wanted to increase room rates by 50 baht or 100 baht a night. 1

Remember that unskilled construction workers receive 200 baht per day or less. 13,000 baht a month is an OK starting salary for staff that are covered by the labour laws, receive all of the government holidays, and they also need training. There are unlimited overtime opportunities. That is why they were queueing for up to 12 hours for the opportunity. Unskilled restaurant workers do not receive this much as well as lots of others here in Thailand. I pay our staff this salary when I first hire them. Cleaners, gardeners, pool boys etc. They are VERY happy with this figure and we train them. I also pay their social security and their taxes. Some staff have been with me for 12 years! (Not on 13,000 baht - they all get regular increases as they become more experienced.) Do not judge Thailand by western standards. 1 1
