US to move nuclear weapons to UK RAF base amid escalating tensions with Russia

Amid escalating tensions between Russia and NATO forces, reports suggest that the United States is contemplating the relocation of nuclear weapons to the UK, specifically to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. The move, if confirmed, would mark the first time since 2008 that the US has stationed nuclear warheads in the UK. The potential deployment is purportedly in response to the increasing threat posed by Russia.

The Ministry of Defence in the UK has refrained from confirming or denying the report, citing the longstanding policy of neither confirming nor denying the presence of nuclear weapons at specific locations. The nuclear weapons speculated to be involved are believed to be B61-12 gravity bombs, deployable from fighter jets and reportedly three times more potent than the Hiroshima bomb. This move is part of a NATO initiative to enhance nuclear sites following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Notably, the last instance of US nuclear missiles stationed in the UK was in 2008, reflecting a reduction in the Cold War threat from Russia at that time. The Telegraph reports Pentagon documents suggesting the deployment to RAF Lakenheath is aimed at bolstering NATO alliances in anticipation of potential conflict with Russia.

The discourse surrounding increased military preparedness extends to discussions on the British Army's strength, with General Sir Patrick Sanders proposing the addition of at least 45,000 reservists and citizens to the existing 74,000-strong ranks. General Sir Richard Sherriff, former deputy supreme allied commander of NATO, advocates considering conscription as part of measures to ready the country for a potential land war. Despite such suggestions, Downing Street has ruled out plans for conscription, emphasizing the voluntary nature of Army service.

Amidst these developments, Carlos Del Toro, the US navy secretary, has urged the UK to reassess the size of its armed forces given the contemporary threats. Downing Street defended its defense spending, highlighting Britain's role as Washington's "partner of choice" in military operations against Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, citing the country's military strength.

I'll bet the UK has ruled out conscription, but I doubt I'd have any takers.

Had every government since BAOR not run the military down they wouldn't even have to consider such a step.

When I was a kid, my brothers and I used to tease each other mercilessly.  It was a game because the one who threw the first punch was always the one who got in trouble.

Reading the history leading up to 2014 and 2022 reminds me of that game.  But on a tragic scale.

And eventually, Mom and Dad caught on.  Like a lot of people around the world have caught on.  Just not the ones who pine for war.

Ukraine lost.  Crimea's gone (on Obama's watch).  Donbas is gone (on Biden's).  The sooner that reality is accepted, the sooner the dying and the spending stop and the sooner the rebuilding can start.

But the person who started the war is the guy Republicans refuse to criticize.

Sorry warmongers you will have to go Judeo for the lessons you want from Judeo-Christian culture if you want legitimacy for what you regard as a just war.

Eye for Eye

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[a] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

Old Testament - aka current Israeli policy

[2] Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. [3] Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

Lakenheath is a key USAF base in Suffolk, it is right next to Milldenhall which is a base for tankers and logistics, U2s were also based there.

Spent many hours at the end of both runways photographing the F15s and before those F111s and F4s coming into land and take off.

You forgot to mention that a large part of Donbas and Donestsk had been de facto annexed under Trump.

Look at a map of NATO & USSR in 1989.

Look at another map of NATO & Russia in 2024.

You will clearly see who provoked this war.

My high school was perched on a promontory which was the highest point in my home town. Vulcans and Canberra's used it for bombing practice. We could see the tops of the aircraft as they came in over the harbour and then they climb out from what seemed like only a few feet above the school roof. They were training to attack Indonesia at the time.

Bring it on I say.

Stop all of this dilly dallying, wipe out half of the world' population and let's start again.

The only downside is having to learn Mandarin. I am useless with tonal languages.

Bad news for European continent.

The problem is that everyone thinks they'll be in the 50% that survives.  Half of us will be sorely disappointed.  For a few nanoseconds.

All we hear about the Ukraine is western  propaganda, "Ukrainian soldier takes out fifteen Russian tanks", "Russian missile hits school/hospital","Russian plane shot down by Ukranian by boy with slingshot." I have never seen any news feed give Putin a chance to state his case ,why he went into Ukraine. Perhaps if we heard it, it would make sense, that is why they don't let us hear it. Also they never mention how many Ukrainians are pro Russian. As for the nukes the Yanks should take them and shove them where the sun don't shine, stay out of the UK.

There are plenty of alternative views available on the issues you mention from reliable sources.
