A video featuring a foreign man, using a stone to smash a lock and chain on his motorcycle after it got clamped by police in Phuket, has gone viral in Thailand. Thai netizens called on the police to clarify the charges the foreigner faces.

 

The video was shared by a TikTok user, @_neung132, who appears to be a traffic police officer in the Phuket province. The video was later deleted from the account but it was reposted on social media platforms by news agencies and local news pages.

 

The nationality of the foreign man in the video was not confirmed. He was wearing a black T-shirt and shorts, and most of his face was covered by a motorcycle helmet.

 

The foreigner was seen repeatedly smashing the lock and chain on the rear wheel of his motorcycle with a stone. The foreigner said something before the video ended but the music drowned out his voice. From his gesture, the foreign motorcycle rider was angry that the wheel clamp was preventing him from getting around.

 

In the comments section, Thai netizens condemned the foreigner for disrespecting Thai laws. Others said Thailand gave foreigners the privilege to challenge Thai laws. Some urged the Phuket police to clarify whether the foreign man faced any legal charges for his illegal actions.

That pitiful array of old bike chain/locks could be forgiven for being assumed to be a child's prank carried out on a red-plated motorcycle

Yup.. he parked in the wrong place and was wheel locked...  Happened to me with the car a couple of times, no biggie, just call the jollies to come and remove it and pay the 200 baht fine....

 

The foreigner was obviously an idiot for attempt to break the chain.....   but for others to call for 'legal charges' does start to smell of xenophobic over-reaction...  If it was a Thai guy would the same sanctimonious puritans ask for clarification of charges ?

Well, I would, yes. Disrespecting Thai law, damaging public property, setting a bad precedent for the other idiots, damaging the image of farang, confirming Thai stereotypes. Personal lockup = next logical step.

Exactly. He should be in full uniform. The collared, checked shirt from the East End thrift shop, dribbling of baked beans on the front; plain cargo shorts; white socks with proper sandals.

Was it just a plain padlock and chain without any identification to state it was a police wheel-lock?

Other paperwork attached to the motorcycle telling the rider to go to a police station for illegal parking?

Or did the rider presume it was a disgruntled local?

Damned foreigners!

This happened on 23 January. He reported to the police on the 24th, was fined and went his way.

I was scrounging washing machine parts on the town dump when some town official came along. He saw me but said nothing just put a chain across the gate and put a lock on it. However I had my bolt cutters so ended up with 20' of 3/8" chain and left town.

Next time use bolt cutters for a quick getaway

Yes on  the red and white markings which mean it is exclusively for the use of the shop owner.

I might tend to agree with your hypothesis.. Being that the video made was posted by a traffic cop then removed from social media only to be picked up again by the news services. 

It also begs me to ask the question about where the news services got the idea that other Thais were complaining this man and asking what other charges he will have for doing it. Especially since most Thais would have done the same with more success and I have yet to see a Thai driver actually follow every traffic law.

Pretty sure its at BigC Jungceylon,  busy cornerand a daily ritual there with tourists ducking in for groceries etc,!
