British passport for grand daughter when daughter is British citizen born in Thailand

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm looking for help on how to get a British passport for my grand daughter. My daughter was born in Thailand and has her birth registered at the British embassy and has a British passport and birth certficate.

Can she apply for a British passport for her daughter at the embassy as a British citizen?

Thank you

Your daughter is British by Descent so cannot pass on her British citizenship to her daughter, if she too was born in Thailand. Technically, anyway, but there may be a way round it if you consult a specialist.

Thank you for the information, that is what I feared, will look into it further, appreciate the replies thank you

Where was the father born?

I was born outside of the UK, so my British Citizenship is by Descent and therefore for my kids to get British citizenship they would either have to be born in the UK, or their mother would need to have been born in the UK.

I'd always thought that if you are British by Descent then there is no automatic right for you to pass on British citizenship to your child but at the same time there was nothing to stop you from applying and having the case assessed on its individual merits.

Been a long time since I looked into this so things may have changed and I could be totally wrong, but its something I would be interested in obtaining an answer to as my grandchildren fall into this category also.

It hasn't changed. If you're British by Descent you cannot pass on your citizenship to children born abroad.  However, there are exceptions so definitely worth pursuing.
