The Corrections Department says the release on parole of Thaksin Shinawatra is in line with the law. The department issued a statement to clarify matters after the former PM’s release caused some raised eyebrows, to say the least.

 

Thaksin returned to the kingdom in August last year, having fled Thailand after being ousted by a military coup in 2006. He lived abroad in self-imposed exile for the next 15 years During that time, he was convicted for corruption and abuse of power while in government and sentenced in absentia by various military governments.

 

When he returned in August, he was met by the authorities and taken to the Supreme Court, where he was sentenced to 8 years in prison (subsequently reduced to 1 year by royal clemency). Later that night, he was removed from Bangkok Remand Prison and transferred to the Police General Hospital on the grounds of “ill health”. He remained there until his release at the weekend, meaning he hasn’t spent a single night in jail.

Everything is legal when you change the laws to make whatever you do legal.

Thank goodness for this proclamation.

 

For a second it stank of corruption but as long as the "Corrections Department" says everything is legal I feel so much better.

They forgot to mention that it was no doubt very lucrative for those who made this happen for Thaksin. He must have parted with some serious wads of cash.

So every convicted criminal can expect to be treated the same as this?

Doubt if much cash was involved .

 

The deal was bigger than that and done at the very top level.

 

Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely

I would love to read a series of articles from journalists who speak with Thai prisoners or their families. People who are in jail for relative minor crimes, old and sick, and how they are treated.

The whole thing makes no sense; UNLESS Toadie is blackmailing the chap higher up the totem pole. When they were both resident in Europe the Toad must have got inside the enemies camp and got enough dirt for a rainy day; which has now come. There is no other possible explanation.

Brown envelopes make a LOT of things "legal"!
