The Thai Cabinet yesterday rejected the proposed Act on Gender Recognition, Title, and Protection of Gender Diversity, citing concerns about false identities if people are allowed to use preferred titles.

 

The titles of people in the LGBTQA+ community have been trending on Thai social media since a transgender model, Phacharanat “Mimi” Nobantao, questioned why Thai citizens were unable to choose their preferred titles according to their gender identities.

Move Forward Party (MFP) member of Parliament Tunyawaj Kamonwongwat addressed the matter during a parliamentary meeting yesterday, presenting the Act on Gender Recognition, Title, and Protection of Gender Diversity.

 

Tunyawaj argued that while the constitution protects human dignity, rights, freedom and equality, there is no existing law that recognises the identity of LGBTQA+ people, which is considered a violation of human dignity.

Tunyawaj went on to explain that Thailand also adheres to the gender binary system, which affects daily life and self-expression. Tunyawaj said that the main idea of this law was self-determination, which would encourage society to embrace diversity.

Despite Tunyawaj’s efforts, the majority of Cabinet members opposed the act, with 256 disapprovals, 152 approvals, one abstention, and one absence.

 

Deceptive identity concerns

 

Pheu Thai Party MP Teerachai Saenkaew expressed his opinion saying the extreme law could lead to problems such as deception or harassment. Some people might change their titles to deceive or harass others. However, he saw that LGBTQA+ people should have the right to include their titles in official documents.

 

Another MP from the Pheu Thai Party, Anusorn Iamsa-ard, stated that LQBTQA+ people had dignity and could be proud of themselves even without titles. Anusorn then sang a song, “Ladyboys protest (กระเทยประท้วง),” by Thai singer Poyfai Malaiporn, which can be translated…

 

“I am proud, proud to be a ladyboy, even if people make fun of me. I don’t care. It’s normal to be judged.”

 

Anusorn also added that the right to choose preferred titles violates other people’s rights by hiding the gender assigned to them at birth.

Disapproval of the bill sparked controversy on Thai social media yesterday, February 21. Many Thai netizens saw that the country does not open and embrace gender diversity even if several events and activities were held to promote it before, such as a huge pride parade and events last year.

 

Some pointed out the irony of promoting the Thai Boys Love series globally while denying citizens the right to express their gender identities.

As expected, the alphabet soup & gender identity issues get in the road of same-sex marriage ... which will keep moving to the right.

Disappointing, but hardly surprising.

 

Thailand is a very conservative country, and is moving backward to pre-1932 quickly.

 

And this was an MFP issue, and anything associated with MFP, including the party and all members, is in the process of being vaporized.

 

It is interesting that the main objection is to assume that everyone has criminal intent (deceive and harass), rather than seeking happiness.

Gender is assigned at conception and that's that.. what you want to call yourself after that is up to you.

Oh yes coz it's only gays that deceive, Heterosexual Thais would never deceive a sole.

Okay, if that's the standard for accepting a bill, then the RTP should be denied funding citing crime concerns, such as corruption and failure to enforce the 2022 Anti-Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act despite order from the Constitutional Court. Extending that thought, the RTM should also be denied funding citing persistent coups, violations of the Constitution and election interference.

As a US Citizen, Retired and happy to be a resident of Thailand, I appreciate the attitude of most Thai people who Accept, Tolerate, and Ignore, the sexual preferences of others. Buddhist ideals are Traditionally non-judgmental and allow for personal freedom that exceeds the standards of most other cultures. LGBTQIA activists are not satisfied with this. They demand EVERYONE must CELEBRATE their sexual choices and situations.

For myself and most modest Thai people, this "In your face" confrontational attitude is objectionable. 

The way I see it, the basic and universal problem is that the legal distinction between male and female humans is itself a discrimination on the basis of sex, a discrimination between men and women. Eliminate that distinction and all problems are solved.

 

Separate sports competitions, for example, have been mentioned and possible problems arising if a man choses to identify as woman and enters a competition for woman. If you have competitions for humans instead of separate competitions for men and women, no problem arises. Has anyone ever seen separate races for male and for female horses or dogs or mice, etc? (Don't mention cock fights or the animal rights activists will come after you 🙂)

You really need to look up what right wing means. The UK has a Tory government which is as left leaning as Tony Blairs government was. Being a real Conservative or Republican is not Right Wing same as loving your country isn't right wing.

Can you share a few examples where you've encountered people "demanding" you celebrate their choices? Do they accost you on the street? Do they really get in your face? How often are you "confronted"?

 

This seems odd, a side of Thailand I've neither experienced nor seen referenced anywhere.

Yes, people find it hard to differentiate between the biological (sex) and the social identity (gender).

 

With few exceptions your sex is a given. You are born with it. A few people are born with physical characteristics of both sexes.

 

Your gender identity was once thought of as being the same as your sex, but that was in smaller, less complex, more rigid societies than exist now almost anywhere in the world. In the modern world gigantism & complexity keep opening up freedoms of identity and action much greater than was available to, say, our parents or grandparents. Like many things in life, that has good and less than good consequences ...

FYI there are many horse races that are only for fillies , or colts and geldings.      

I am not well versed on mouse racing...

Yea I Id as a Pitbull And my lady friend ID's  as Miss Piggy ,My neighbor Id's himself as a Stallion.
