Praween Chanklai, aka “Kamnan Nok”, who allegedly ordered the killing of a highway police officer during a party at his house in Nakhon Pathom on September 6th last year, in front of over a dozen other police officers, was sentenced to two years in prison today.

Fifteen officers who partied at the house at the time of the shooting and did not intervene to stop the shooting, allegedly by a body guard of Chanklai, were sentenced to serve jail terms of 16 months to two years without suspension by the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases.

Chanklai was found guilty of attempted murder and of ordering the shooting of Pol Maj Siwakorn Saibua, an inspector of Highway Police Sub-division 2 at the party. The officer had, reportedly, denied Chanklai’s request that his nephew be promoted, resulting in a quarrel between the two men and the shooting to death of the officer.

The court found all the 15 police officers, with the ranks from a major down to master sergeant, guilty of malfeasance in office and dereliction of duty. One officer, MSgt Apirak Rotepuang was, however, acquitted.

September 6th last year

It's always amazing how fast some people in Thailand go to jail, even if they are influential.

Others, who seems to be guilty, stay out of jail for years...

2 years...out in 6 months. This case had a heaps of attention...I'm guessing why only 2 years..otherwise there would have been no time in gaol.

At least we got a follow up of the outcome this time. Far to light sentence, but still a sentence.

All this makes me wonder why the Red Bull heir stays in hiding for 10-15-20 years when he only could get 1-2 years and all good.

Pathetic sentence, but he has friends in high places.

Cops who commit crimes should get 2x the sentence.

The title “Kamnan Nok” imprisoned for two years" I believe is mistaken.  Yesterday the press reported that he would be sentenced at a later date - after the police.

After besmirching their uniform, will they be allowed back into the force after serving/not serving their pathetic sentence?

Life here doesn't mean the same as life where many of us come from, no matter the western country. They pray for the dead, which does nothing, because it's how you live that determines where you go after you pass, and no one can help another's soul.

The way animals are treated here, by and large, shows the lack of respect for life , which snowballs down to how humans are treated as well. Animals are part of your family, and still have meaning when they pass from puppy and kitten cute stage to older and more stable, less playful, and more loyal.

A 2 year prison sentence for the paid murder of a cop is a death or life sentence back home in the US, with very little chance for parole. The people who sat there and did nothing are guilty of course, but them getting up to 2 years also is ludicrous and insulting, as is the original sentence to the life of the policeman. Every time this happens, it gets news worldwide, and more and more people look at Thailand as what it's been for many decades, a place to come and have sex with pretty women, eat some good food and leave, a lot never returning because of what happens here daily.

It's amazing how much they depend on tourist dollars and they are shooting themselves in the foot all the time, allowing this kind of corruption to continue. A bad reputation for a lot of things here, deals trade, tourism  and other business a bad hand and it will only get worse with each and every thing that happens here daily. This is a disgraceful sentence handed down and will happen again and again because once something happens that is despicable that is punished this softly, others will see it and not care about what little consequences might be given. This happens all over also, not just here, but seems to be a lot more here than other places. Some in the US get 20 years for marijuana crimes, while another kills and gets 5, all because of crooked judges, lawyers and prosecutors.

I wonder how long he would have got for disarming a cop in Phuket.

They'll all be on inactive duty whatever the hell that means in LOS

Surely this is a late April Fools joke. 2 years for ordering a murder? Obviously the Thai legal system is highly corrupt, a joke in itself. He should have got life.

and Thailand is only 44 on the global crime index?

attempted murder charges???

This is a case  where the less than popular Prime Minister could boost his standing by entering the fray and demanding a full and proper sentence for the cop who ordered the killing.  No reason why someone higher up could not indicate his extreme displeasure with the sentence.

I bet he dyes his hair black and has various ailments.

I think it means being in the police as normal.

So the upshot here is:

The one guy who has been found guilty of ordering the murder of a policeman gets nearly the same sentence (2 years) as 15 or so other policemen (16 months to 2 years) who didn't kill anyone, but also didn't intervene to stop the shooting or apprehend the suspect.

Pathetic!!!

Quote

Chanklai was found guilty of attempted murder and of ordering the shooting of Pol Maj Siwakorn Saibua,

PS - how can Kamnan Nok here have been found guilty of "attempted murder" when the policeman who he ordered be shot actually died from the shooting?

Another example of the Thai so called justice systems complete disregard for the victim and victims family.

It's not what you know but who you know.

No doubt the usual bundle is safely in the accounts of those responsible for such a decision.

Is that justice ?

Why isn't he in jail?

I believe he will soon have health issues, get sickly, and need to go to a hospital!

What a joke when we regularly read stories of 50yr sentences for fraud or embezzlement….who knows what they actually serve tit

And what of the "lackey" who actually carried out the order ?

I have just found out that this sentence is only for his complicity in attempting to cover up and hide the evidence. Apparently there are further charges pending. Hopefully this will include murder and accessory to murder. Once again the Thai media has not reported the full facts
