Romanian Court Allows Trial of Influencer Andrew Tate Accused of Human Trafficking

A Bucharest court has given the green light for the trial of social media influencer Andrew Tate, who faces charges of human trafficking, rape, and involvement in a criminal gang to exploit women sexually. The decision, issued by the Bucharest Tribunal, paves the way for legal proceedings against Tate and his brother Tristan, although they plan to appeal the ruling.

The court's decision, delivered almost 10 months after the initial charges were brought against the brothers, affirmed that the prosecutors' case against Tate met the necessary legal standards. However, no trial date has been set yet, and the ruling can still be contested.

Reacting to the court's decision, one of the brothers' lawyers criticized it for lacking legal justification and promptly filed an appeal. The 37-year-old influencer, along with his brother and two Romanian women, was arrested near the Romanian capital in December 2022 and charged in June of the following year. Both brothers vehemently deny all allegations leveled against them.

Initially detained in Bucharest and later placed under house arrest, the Tate brothers await trial as per Romanian legal procedures. Meanwhile, in a separate legal development, a Romanian court approved Britain's extradition request for the Tate brothers on charges of sexual aggression dating back to 2012-15. However, extradition will only proceed after the conclusion of the trial proceedings in Romania.

Accusations against the Tate brothers include recruiting victims through deception, coercing them into producing pornographic content for social media, and subjecting them to physical violence and psychological manipulation. Andrew Tate, known for promoting an ultra-masculine lifestyle, has amassed a large following on social media, although critics argue that his content perpetuates misogynistic attitudes, a claim he denies.
