Two sacred oxen, Por and Piang, have been chosen for this year’s Ploughing Ceremony at Sanam Luang, Bangkok.

Underlining their importance, two reserves, Perm and Pool, are also ready. All four were chosen using traditional selection factors like color, shape, size, leg strength, tail length, and overall appearance.

Por and Piang were donated to the Livestock Development Department by Somchai Damtamis and Arkhom Wattanakul as a tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Ploughing Ceremony, presided over by His Majesty the King, marks the beginning of Thailand’s rice-growing season.

In the ceremony, the sacred oxen are harnessed to a wooden plough and sow rice seeds on ceremonial grounds as Brahmin court members watch. Later, the oxen are offered different foods. Their choices carry predictions for the upcoming harvest. For instance, if they choose rice or maize, plenty of cereals and fruits are expected.

The ceremony then sees the Lord pick one of three pieces of different-length cloth. The shortest predicts abundant highland rainfall and rice, medium suggests average rainfall with ample fruits and meat, while the longest suggests plentiful lowland rice despite little rainfall.

Will Saint Tony the chosen one, preside over this ?

Can anyone explain to me who the Lord is that will be there to chose the cloth ?

Strange , I would have thought they would have been provided by a higher, "celestial authority" what with them being "sacred" and all that, As it appears that higher authority was not available. it was lucky Somchai was able to step in and help them out.   I'm assuming the reserves are necessary in case that the original choice are summoned back to heaven, for whatever reason.

All very well as a tourist attraction but some here believe in this rubbish, The results could easily be skewed, by giving offering them some of the 10 year old rice which they would probably refuse, or maybe vomit if they did accept it

"Two pairs of sacred oxen"

Isn't two pairs four oxen versus a pair which is two?

1 pair are reserves, maybe incase they need a second opinion.....:giggle:

I think it is the benchwarmers that were mentioned that is the second pair.

First alternates or Miss/mister Congeniality oxen.

Perm and Pool.
