Due to Rabin and his wife’s strong emotional connection to the animals, his only condition for taking these buffaloes is that they must not be sold to slaughterhouses.

That's ok no slaughterhouses ,we can cut them up in the backyard no probs.

Good for him, but I fear for their welfare. Thailand claims to be a Buddhist country but, nevertheless, most Thais eat animals.

So basically, 99% buffalos are now just pets here, correct? I mean, I've never seen one plow a field or do any sort of work as they were traditionally used?

Correct, or am I way off base and there are still a % of farmers who work them?

You are way of base. There are still a %% of farmers still using buffalo to work, albeit a small %%%.

Some of his buffaloes have participated in and won national beauty contests

Compared to some on beach road, they would win down hands.

I depends where you are. I can't answer for everywhere.

In the village where we live there are 2. As a percentage of those who still tend their own land, many now rent it out to the big companies with the large machinery, it's about 20%.

As a whole, including those I mentioned above, it's nearer 5%.
