Some so-called "Traditions" just have to end! Polluting and making people sick is NOT a Tradition! It is an unnecessary habit! STOP it!! 1

Perhaps you - or the Thai guvamint - might be able to offer poor Thai peasants some doable and cost-free alternatives to their traditional agricultural practices? 2 2

MrJ2U
It's the way it's done all over South East Asia. Most of the "Haze" and "Smoke" is coming from Myanmar, Lao's,Indonesia,Cambodia, etc. Bad air has been around Chiang Mai forever. In hindsight I'm glad I chose not build a house there. It's never going to change. 1

The alternative adopted in Western countries that banned burning is to plough the stalks into the ground. This does not kill all the bugs so some measures may be required to assist. There are also stubble digesters that can process the stubble into compost. The Government could assist with this but do not seem inclined to spend any junket money on it. In my family here, ploughing in is the modus operandi but they have to pay a contractor to come and do it. And guess who gets to pay the contractor ...
