UK teacher found dead in Sathon home

BANGKOK: -- A foreign teacher was found dead hanging from a curtain in her apartment in Bangkok’s Sathon district, police said yesterday.

Damita Mathusek, 49, a British national, taught English once a week for more than 10 years to second-year students at the Police Cadet Academy in Nakhon Pathom’s Sam Phran district.

The body, clad in shorts and a T-shirt, was found hanging from a curtain attached to a bolt on a wall of her living room. Three wounds from a sharp instrument were also discovered on her body, and traces of a white powder were detected on her lip. There were bloodstains on the floor of the bathroom and living room. The apartment was on the sixth floor of Pitak Cord Apartments in Soi Sathon 1. Police said she had been dead for two days.

Mathusek also worked for seven years in the foreign department of an import-export company, the K Ak Group. Company owner Warathep Sichawala said that her work attendance had been good, and she would always phone in if she had to be absent. She did not arrive on Monday, so he asked one of her colleagues to phone her at home, but there was no answer, said Warathep.

Her death was discovered after someone from the Academy called the apartment office after she failed to show up to teach. A maid went upstairs and detected a foul odour coming from Mathusek’s room, so she contacted police.

The maid said Mathusek lived alone for two years. Lieutenant Achawin Bunthamcharoen of Thung Mahamek police station said her neighbours reported Mathusek had mentioned four days earlier that her jewellery had been stolen. She asked for advice and was told to file a complaint with the police. They also said she claimed to suffer from cancer, and she later stopped talking to people and appeared stressed.

Police suspect suicide, but her body was sent to the Forensic Institute to determine the exact cause of death.

10 years in Bkk? Very sad passing indeed. Makes me think, If we know of someone slipping into a state of withdrawal etc, and no intervention is working, might not hurt to send a timely email off to their family. We're all a ways from 'home' afterall and am sure the family would appreciate it and the friend would thank you down the road.

Didn't know her, but after seeing the Lady's photo in the Nation today, felt prompted to add my thoughts. Take care All
