Phuket is currently trying to overcome a problem with managing its daily waste, particularly focusing on waste separation. The Phuket Provincial Governance Board inspected the Phuket Provincial Waste Disposal Centre and Incinerator at Saphan Hin yesterday. The visit was led by Vice Chairman Peeraphit Aongcharoen and was intended to check on the progress of budget projects for the 2024 fiscal year.

Head of wastewater treatment, Jakkrit Songsang, who is also the acting head of the Solid Waste and Sewage Management Group at the center, gave a report on the progress of four key projects. The board emphasized the importance of these projects for the community.

The Governance Board highlighted the need for the Phuket City Municipality to improve its waste segregation management. They also stressed the value of educational campaigns targeting students and the general public about the importance of separating waste.

The Board also marked the importance of the educational programs in promoting a mindset of waste separation among the locals. Additionally, they stressed the need to ensure that budget allocations for these projects are used wisely to maximize benefits to the community.

Crikey. Thais in Phuket must be well off then.

Here on Samui there are 'professional' scavengers that go around all of the collection points separating the waste and selling it to the local recycling places.

One guy working for me resigned as he could make more money scavenging (and scavenging was easier).

Apart from the scavengers, the official collectors (in Kamala) also rip open the bags to pull out recyclables before it goes into the crusher - they have big black plastic bags hanging off the back of the truck for this stuff.

Also, at regular intervals along the back roads there are cages for plastic waste.

In the past, in our area, scavengers were used to open the black bags to see if inside there were some recyclables, leaving a lot of mess all around.
Now we separate waste from recyclables and put them inside transparent bags, so they can immediately see where is something useful.

They do not need to open all the bags and do not leave (almost) any mess.
