The 2024 Summer Olympics is set to begin this week, but instead of the traditional opening ceremony featuring a parade of athletes entering a central arena, there will be a parade of boats down the River Seine. While the Olympics will start with a celebration, they are not insulated from the impact of geopolitical crises and societal debates over gender identity in sports.

This year's games will feature 32 sports, 329 medal events, and over 10,000 athletes representing 206 National Olympic Committees.
