Since the end of Covid, Thailand has seen a rise in aviation incidents, coinciding with the resurgence in air travel demand following the easing of travel restrictions.

The Thailand Annual Safety Report 2023, recently published by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), indicates a significant increase in the number of "serious incidents" involving aircraft. Last year, there were 11 such incidents, a substantial rise from the 2 reported in 2021 and 6 in 2022.

Despite this surge in serious incidents, the number of aircraft "accidents" fell to two in 2023 from four in the previous year, continuing a downward trend observed since 2018.

The report underscores, "Although the accident rate remains fairly steady, there has been a significant increase in serious incidents since 2021 and the end of the coronavirus pandemic."

Commercial aircraft accounted for the majority of these serious incidents in 2023, with a smaller number involving privately owned planes. The international definition of a “serious incident” is as an event involving circumstances indicating a high probability of an accident related to the aircraft operation.

Notable incidents reported last year,2023, were an emergency landing at Hat Yai airport on June 24 due to cockpit smoke and a plane landing short of the runway at Samui airport on August 29.
