What is Kyiv's plan in doing this?

It's definitely not easily apparent to casual observers.

Some interesting theories from a credible source.

It's very obvious, there are a number of objectives:

1) Since Ukraine's military was losing on the real fronts quite badly they wanted to raise moral by showing they can strike big in Russia itself.

2) Russia continues to sell gas to Europe and this gas goes through Kursk. One objective was to sabotage this source of income for Russia. This has failed according to the most recent reports in Russia.

3) Ukraine was hoping that Putin draws experienced troops from the main fronts and deploys them in Kursk instead. Again this has failed as Putin has only diverted troops from lesser combat areas.

4)  Ukraine had the misguided idea that attacking civilians would ferment revolt and interior unrest, stoking oppostion to Putin. Again, this has failed

5)  Zelesky realised he has to accept a negtioated peace soon, and wanted to get some territory to improve his negotiation position.

Basically though,it was an act of desperation, since UKraine had run out of options in the main militar theatre. We have seen this in the past when countries facing a numerically superior army decide to strike at civilians instead.

Obvioiusly they cannot seriously hope to hold these meaningless villages for longer than a few months at best. Overwhelming Russian numbers will soon defeat the Kursk invaders. They know this and have been running and hiding, like in real guerilla warfare, evading fights with Russian brigades that have now poured into the region.

What's very obvious actually is that you're carrying water for genocidal war criminal Putin.

It's 'interesting' that the Germans have pointedly spoken about negotiating with Putin's successor. That partly explains the panicked shuffling. Again, always interesting to see the replies of the two dimensional posters who think they know it all.

Oh I'm sorry, I thought you wanted to discuss the question seriously. My bad. I see you have no real points to make.

You're no more sorry than the Russian dictator who came into power with a terrorist attack on Russian civilians for the damage he's done to his own people, never mind Ukrainians. On the other hand that moron believes Ukrainians ARE Russians.

You might even get to see who really believes in Putin's Russia and who wants to be independent. Talking about it here won't make any difference to the outcome.

Apparently, NATO is heavily involved in the recent incursions into Russia.  Anyway, it will all end badly if it doesn’t stop soon.

"Apparently"...............🤣

That is the garbage propaganda line being pushed on Russian state tv (and you believe it!).

The Russian response seems missing at present, but IMO they are allowing them to advance and then cut off their supply line, which effectively means the end of the incursion. Anyway, that's what I'd do.

If Ukraine wants to be independent it has to stop poking Russia in the eye with a stick. If you are a neighbour of a country like Russia, then you have to take into account Russian interests. Just as if you live next to America you have to take into account American interests, as Panama found out.

This is just the reality. Independence is all very well, but you can't antagonize countries like Russia, if you're a small neighbour. It's just no a wise way to ensure your independence.

You've got to be joking.

Putin has no interest in Ukraine ever being independent. Period. End of story.

You're suggesting if Ukrainians act like good little slaves, he might let them.

Heroes - they defend Mother Russia. All this silly excursion will do is unite even the critics to fight. Russia is a hardened beast when woken up - ask the Germans.

You are not much of a history student. Russia probably would have collapsed if not for the Atlantic supply convoys, and the opening of other fronts by the Allies. Stalin had purged the entire officer corps in 1936. He was planning to retreat behind the Urals. After the war was over, Russian soldiers captured by the Germans committed suicide rather than be sent back to Russia. They knew what was awaiting them.

This time, it's corruption. It's estimated Shoigu has pocketed a lot of the military budget. Trucks with rotting tires, soldiers with flak jackets made out of cardboard. Morale is terrible.

The excursion is smart, not silly. It gives Putin a propaganda black eye, diverts troops needed on the front lines, and the Ukrainians can play merry hell with logistical hubs.

You're wrong. Putin has no problem with Ukraine being independent, all he wants is a Russian friendly neighbour. Not a pro-American neigbour.

Ukrainians don't have to be "slaves". But if they think they can be cheerleaders for America, join NATO, well obviously this is not taking account of Russian interests. If you are a small neighbour of Russia, then you have to take into account Russian interests. Same if you are a small neighbour of America, as Panama found out.

Sucking off the tit of the west but traitorous indeed. He should head over to Russia to see how he likes it there.

I can't take you seriously. It's obvious that you haven't even read what the Russians have openly admitted about what they really think about Ukraine.

I don't know you can equate the two. Noriega was a drug trafficker and dictator, Ukraine is a democracy.

Russian "interests" are in getting the Soviet Union back, Putin has repeatedly said so. That ship sailed long ago.
