Trump’s Comments on Kamala Harris About Pence Backfire Amid Online Mockery

Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, faced widespread criticism on social media after accusing Kamala Harris of being "horrible" to his former Vice President Mike Pence. The comments were made during an interview with Fox News's Mark Levin, which aired on Saturday, and a clip of the exchange quickly gained traction online.

“Now, they have Kamala who has many deficiencies, but she’s a nasty person,” Trump remarked. “The way she treated Mike Pence was horrible. The way she treats people is horrible.” Trump did not elaborate on the specific incident he was referring to, though many speculated he was recalling the heated 2020 vice-presidential debate between Harris and Pence. Newsweek reached out to Harris’s campaign for comment, though no response was available at the time.

 

The clip, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by @Acyn, a senior digital editor at the Trump-critical news site MeidasTouch, garnered 2.3 million views by the following morning. Many online users were quick to highlight the irony of Trump’s statement, given his role in the events of January 6, 2021, when he pressured Pence to reject the certification of the 2020 election results, placing his vice president in direct danger.

 

MSNBC correspondent Molly Jong-Fast responded to the clip with a simple “Ummmm,” capturing the incredulity of many. Another frequent Trump critic, @NYinLA2121, noted, “You thought what Kamala did was horrible, you’re gonna want to sit down when I tell you how his former boss treated him. It’s a doozy.” David Corn, Washington D.C. bureau chief for Mother Jones, added, “What? Did she call him the p-word and incite the violent mob that chanted ‘Hang Mike Pence’? Because if she did, she probably should drop out of the race.”

 

Jason Selvig of the political comedy duo The Good Liars added a satirical touch: “Kamala Harris famously sent a mob of Trump supporters to the Capitol after Mike Pence.” His comment underscored the perceived absurdity of Trump’s criticism, given his own actions surrounding the Capitol riot.

 

After losing the 2020 election, Trump repeatedly pressured Pence to overturn the Electoral College results. On January 6, 2021, Trump made multiple posts on X, urging Pence to reject the certification of the vote. At 1:00 a.m., he posted, “If Vice President @Mike_Pence comes through for us, we will win the Presidency.” Later, at 8:17 a.m., Trump tweeted, “All Mike Pence has to do is send them back to the States, AND WE WIN. Do it Mike, this is a time for extreme courage!”

 

According to The New York Times, Trump later called Pence, allegedly telling him, “You can either go down in history as a patriot, or you can go down in history as a p****.” The situation escalated that afternoon as Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, chanting “Hang Mike Pence” and erecting a gallows outside. Pence was evacuated from the Senate chamber at 2:13 p.m., narrowly avoiding the rioters who breached the Capitol.

 

At 2:17 p.m., Trump tweeted again, criticizing Pence for lacking the courage to challenge the election results. This tweet, like many others from that day, has since been deleted. The events of January 6 remain a focal point of criticism for Trump, with many questioning the safety and integrity of his vice presidency under the circumstances he himself helped to create.

Trump’s recent comments about Harris have only reignited these debates, underscoring the ongoing scrutiny of his actions during one of the most contentious moments in recent American history.
