Thailand is set to enhance its natural disaster warning system significantly with a major expansion of automated monitoring stations. Yesterday, September 3, the Friends in Need Volunteers Foundation joined forces with various national agencies, signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the second phase of this nationwide initiative aimed at bolstering flood and disaster protection.

 

This ambitious project, inspired by the efforts of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha and His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, will see the addition of over 500 telemetry stations across Thailand. A foundation spokesperson expressed that these stations are crucial for real-time disaster surveillance, timely warnings, and efficient evacuations.

 

“Over 510 automated telemetry stations will be established in watershed forests, providing critical data for disaster monitoring and water management nationwide,” the spokesperson stated.

 

 

 

 

The new phase builds upon a successful first launch in February 2020, which saw 242 stations come online. These stations will transmit vital data to the National Hydroinformatics Data Centre, and heavy rain warnings will be directly sent to citizens via the LINE app. While the current network covers 19 flood-prone communities, the new expansion aims to reach substantially more areas.

 

The second phase brings together ten national agencies, including the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC), the Royal Forest Department, and the Royal Thai Army, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated efforts in disaster management that will better protect lives and property across Thailand.
