The international world order is facing a level of threat not seen since the Cold War, according to the heads of the UK's MI6 and the US's CIA. In a rare joint article, Sir Richard Moore and William Burns expressed deep concern about the global challenges that have emerged, particularly highlighting the ongoing war in Ukraine as a critical point of focus.

 

Writing in the Financial Times, the two intelligence chiefs stressed the unity between the UK and the US in resisting an increasingly assertive Russia and President Vladimir Putin's aggressive actions in Ukraine. They emphasized that their agencies had anticipated the war, allowing them to warn the international community by declassifying crucial information to aid Kyiv.

 

Beyond Ukraine, the intelligence leaders noted efforts to "disrupt the reckless campaign of sabotage" being carried out across Europe by Russian intelligence. They also referenced their ongoing work to promote de-escalation in the Israel-Gaza conflict and to counter the resurgence of the Islamic State (IS).

 

In their op-ed, Moore and Burns wrote, “There is no question that the international world order – the balanced system that has led to relative peace and stability and delivered rising living standards, opportunities, and prosperity – is under threat in a way we haven’t seen since the Cold War.” They underscored that “successfully combating this risk” is fundamental to the longstanding special relationship between the UK and the US.

 

Among the array of unprecedented threats faced by both nations, the war in Ukraine remains a top priority. Now in its third year following Russia's invasion in February 2022, the conflict has underscored the importance of steadfast support for Ukraine. The intelligence chiefs asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin “will not succeed,” reinforcing the critical nature of sustained international backing for Ukraine.

 

Moore and Burns also pointed to the broader efforts against Russian influence, particularly its attempts to use technology to spread misinformation and create divisions within the international community. The rise of China was identified as the primary intelligence and geopolitical challenge of this century, prompting both agencies to reorganize their operations to address this priority.

 

In addition to addressing the threats posed by Russia and China, the intelligence chiefs highlighted their efforts in the Middle East, particularly in response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. They have worked “ceaselessly” to secure a ceasefire and negotiate hostage deals, pushing for restraint and de-escalation in a region that remains highly volatile.

 

The joint appearance and coordinated message from the heads of MI6 and the CIA underscore the gravity of the current global situation, as well as the importance of continued collaboration between the UK and the US in navigating these complex challenges.

Perhaps you are confused,it’s Putin emptying his prisons arming the inmates and sending them to wreak havoc on their neighbors not the cia nor mi6 I hope that helps though I doubt it.Pay heed to these gentlemen they are in the know.the Russians have been stooging around the underwater fiber optic cables lately perhaps something is going to happen soon.hope not!

The US and Russia are just as bad as each other though I believe Russia can be contained in the short to medium  term.

 

It's China that worries me.

Goody goody for the west that we haven't had a major world war recently, but let's face it, the "international world order" ( should that not be the "western world order"? ) has been abysmal for Vietnam, the Middle East, and any country that annoys a US president. Not exactly beneficial for most countries in Africa either.

 

IMO the hypocrisy is so blatant that I'm surprised they managed to say it without blushing.

 

I wonder if the Ukrainian  war widows and fatherless children are as convinced about it as those two?

However, let's not fool ourselves that it's a collaboration between two equals.

The ongoing program will, IMO, be to convince British leaders to continue their poodle to master relationship.

Far as I know the last time Britain told the US to stick their war was the Vietnam debacle.

From the day entering office Biden has gone around sabre rattling stating the USA needs to lead the world. What he's telling us is he wants to rule the world. Sullivan is a hard-core neocon along with Blinken. I wouldn't believe a word those two guys say. When I want an honest assessment of what is happening in the world I go to esteemed academics like Jeffrey Sachs & John Mearsheimer who are nearly daily on one YouTube channel or another. Former top CIA analyst Roy McGovern is also worthwhile watching.

It will not pass for sure. China supplying weapons to Russia. China showing strategic moves towards nearby Asian nations. Putin now supporting Harris campaign. If the US is called to act on either Russia or China to protect or defend. You can be sure it will be minimal. If harris is elected you can be sure Chinas war machine will begin simply because Harris is talking about removing tariffs from China. Giving them more money to supply a war effort. So far, Russia and China are waiting to see what happens in the US elections. To see if there will be a new strong leader adamant on protecting and defending people. Learning Mandarin may be a good idea.

I wasn't clear. I meant that if WE are not going to pass ie die, it might be worth learning Mandarin. At least one could get a cushy job as interpreter for the new overlords.

 

IMO most western men are too soft to fight properly ( fighting imaginary enemies on a computer game is not preparation for the real thing ), and it'll be a cakewalk for them. Hopefully I'll have passed by then.
