Hotel prices rise as Phuket sees 42% increase in foreign tourists H1 2024

PHUKET — Tourism booms in the first half of 2024, driving hotel room prices up in Phuket,  said a Thai real estate analyst.

 

Carlos Martinez, Director of Research and Advisory at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co, Ltd, a Thai real estate advisory firm, commented on the overall tourism industry in Phuket for the first half of 2024, stating that the industry has recovered strongly with a total of 4.3 million tourists, which is only 7 percent below pre-COVID-19 levels.

 

The number of foreign tourists increased by over 42 percent year-on-year to 2.6 million, close to pre-COVID figures. The improvement in air transportation capacity is expected to support further growth in international tourist numbers in the second half of the year....

I noticed that hotel prices are actually  falling in Phuket:

plenty of hotels, year round, less than 3,000 baht
the average seems high, cause the expensive hotels ( 9,000/night an up)  have 200+ rooms

1. Hotels in leisure destinations such as Phuket, Krabi and Pattaya are recommended to refrain from their usual practice of slashing room rates during the low season if the average occupancy hasn't sharply dropped, says hospitality market analyst STR.

2. Tourism operators have warned the new tourism minister to brace for a nosedive in the global economy and fiercer competition next year, urging the government to start planning for the worst-case scenario from this year.

Shouldn't the prives be lower according to thai wisdom or are they just getting greedy?

The Indonesian government is poised to impose a moratorium against the construction of hotels, villas, and nightspots in the popular resort island of Bali in a bid to curb overdevelopment and overtourism.

As of end-2023, there were 541 hotels operating in Bali, up from 507 in 2019.

The imposition of the moratorium is also part of government plans to reform tourism on the island by way of improved quality in terms of services and amenities, increased opportunities for employment, and the preservation of the area’s cultural heritage.

Just as in Thailand they'll find ways around it

March of last year, best value I could find Rawai way was a guesthouse on a side soi a couple blocks from Rawai Beach, $2800thb a night, 75$US. In the Philippines that same money got me a super deluxe room in a luxury hotel, view of the city in Manila, a great room with my own private deck over the beach in Boracay.

 

But after spending 11 years in Phuket it was worth it to see good friends. Downside is that the population has tripled from when I lived there, total zoo.

 

THB at 30 to the US dollar, probably just going to do the Philippines this year, Northern Luzon, Cebu, south of Cebu to dive with the whalesharks.

Plenty of perfectly adequate rooms (30m², balcony, powerful shower, decent wi-fi, fridge, TV) around Patong at less than B500 at the moment.

Palm Village, one of the nicest places in Rawai Thb 1300-- at the moment.

When I was working in Phuket,would see hotel customers overlooking Patong Beach and the first 10 meters into the sea during high season would be brown. Totally polluted. You would need to pay me to stay in Patong.

 

Palm Resort Rawai gets $2200thb a night in high season, but that is a bargain, thank you for the tip. Cheers, GOM
