Floodwaters have inundated Sailomjoy Market in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province, for the eighth time this year, according to local authorities on Tuesday. The persistent flooding is directly linked to heavy rains driven by Typhoon Yagi's remnants, which initially hit Vietnam.

 

Despite the typhoon weakening into a low-pressure system, the area continues to endure torrential downpours. This has led to rising water levels in the Sai River, resulting in extensive flooding throughout the market. Vendors have scrambled to evacuate and transport their goods to higher ground, with the area beneath the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge being particularly hard-hit. Floodwaters have reached as far as the market’s intersection, causing significant disruptions.

 

 

 

 

In the Chiang Khong district, the Mekong River has also swollen due to increased rainfall and water flow from its tributaries. Local authorities are on high alert, vigilantly monitoring the situation in Chiang Saen, Chiang Khong, and Wiang Kaen districts to mitigate potential damage.

 

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued stern warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern, northeastern, and eastern parts of the country. They caution residents to prepare for possible flash floods and landslides as the extreme weather continues to batter the region.

As long as the mega projects (with mega budgets) keep on coming, and the uber-rich in Bangkok do not get their flashy cars caught in floods - everything will be OK.
