In a bold move today, a coalition of concerned parents and young people submitted a protest letter to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, opposing the government's recent policies aimed at legitimising the informal economy and legalising gambling. The policies include the construction of a multi-billion baht entertainment complex, which has triggered significant public outcry. Leading the charge, Vasinee Sonsaeb, a mother and advocate, voiced serious concerns. She questioned whether these policies would truly promote tourism or bring in new revenue, suggesting instead that they might largely benefit private investors. Vasinee pointed out that legitimising gambling could expose the youth to addiction, arguing that the Prime Minister should reflect on the potential negative consequences for future generations. The group proposes a different path: enforcing stricter laws and addressing the corruption endemic in government bureaucracy. Among their recommendations, the coalition calls for scrapping the entertainment complex project and revising the policy to legalise gambling.
