Chiang Mai Floods Prompt Urgent Response to Swollen Ping River

Last night's sudden overflow of the Ping River has left downtown Chiang Mai heavily flooded, with commercial areas such as Chang Klan Road severely affected. Troops and volunteers have been actively filling sandbags to strengthen the town's flood wall, while numerous parked cars have been submerged, though larger vehicles can still navigate the water-clogged streets.

 

Dusit Pongsapipat, chief of the Office for Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, aimed to clear up rampant rumours by confirming that the flood wall at Ban Ko Klang in the Pa Daet sub-district had not completely failed. Instead, sandbags installed by villagers had given way, necessitating additional reinforcements to protect the area.

 

Governor Nirat Pongsitthithavorn has been overseeing teams tracking water levels in various parts of the Ping River since the crisis began. This ongoing effort, in collaboration with the Royal Department of Irrigation, is crucial as many areas remain vulnerable to further flooding.

 

 

 

 

The province's command centre has been inundated with urgent calls for assistance, particularly from homes with bed-ridden relatives. The continuous downpour from the recent Soulik storm, combined with a low-pressure system, has exacerbated the flooding situation, with heavy rains persisting since last Saturday.

 

The Royal Irrigation Department's local office has warned that Ping River levels may temporarily stabilise but will likely rise again due to runoff from nearby river basins in Chiang Dao District. The residents of Chiang Mai are thus bracing for a challenging period ahead, as efforts to combat the flooding continue in earnest.

It is not as if this was unexpected.

They've not done a bad job this year. We have a klong that flows across our land and it's been channelling water full bore for the past two months, all the feeds from the main water source have been the same way for weeks. The problem now is that the reservoir at Mae Tang is now at capacity and they will be forced to release water from the dam, into the Ping, this evening, locals around the dam have already been warned......that will make the CM situation markedly worse.

Is there anyway to wall in the ping river or no solution to this which may get worse into the future...

Wall in the Ping river and some other poor sod down stream gets the flood?

They have been woking on this to the South in the city. Problem, if you wa;ll the river at the city core ... distracts/severly handicaps the riverbank tourist area.

The river is lined with restaurants along the river bank. In order to build a retaining wall  the view of the river bank would be blocked. I should add, I have lived here in Chiang Mai since 2011 and have seen the downstream wall improvements but if extended into the core it would distract from the current river usage.

Nah, a wall with a cycling/footpath along to top would be great.

They can put flood free restaurants and bars on stilts alongside the wall.

I understand the thinking of doing so but it will not happen as it would cost billions of baht from the hotels, restaurants, Wat along both sides of the river. Ask at Samsen Villa, Soi Ping Bar & Restaurant, Anatara Chiang Mai Resort, Wat Chai Mongkhon where they have the Ping River Cruises, Goodview ... what they think of the idea.
