Bob Marley Is The Only International Star To Make It In Thailand

Sorry ts but I disagree. I've lived here a few years and been to enough parties to know that your average Thai wouldn't have a clue who these bands were. They may recognize a few songs but that would mostly be people who previously worked in the entertainment industry that dealt with Farang. While you may have groups like I-Nam wearing Beatles shirts, it doesn't mean that the average person would know who they are.

Have you ever asked Thai people who the famous star is in the picture beside HM?

I have yet to meet one who knew it was Elvis.

You are making the typical mistake of trotting out that tired old phrase "the average thai"

why are the people you know more indicative of thainess than the ones i know?

the huge cd collections of my friends, and their parties notwithstanding, i say you are wrong.

the 40 year old taxi driver i spent an hour with in traffic listeng to his ccr cd would probably agree. he seemed pretty average to me.

Sorry t.s., I'm wrong and your right. I apologies.

I agree 'the average Thai' is a tired old phrase.

one not yet mentioned is santana. while i agree most younger thais may not recognise the music, they will at least recognise his picture.

if you are familiar with the music of carabao, you can hear santanas influence.

sek loso also breaks out into jimmy page mode every now and then, firing off a few riffs, although he would be the exception to the normal thai band.

most of the younger english speaking thais i know seem to like the beatles, especially the lyrics of john lennon.

Loso finished their set with 'Purple Haze' on the two concerts I saw with them back in the nineties.

My wife is not very interested in music, but she knew of the Beatles and Rolling Stones before she met me. Not Queen and U2 though, I don't think either of those bands have made it too well here. The bands that have actually bothered to play in Thailand though, will be well known - Robbie Williams, Red Hot Chilipeppers, etc.

In an attempt to generalize, the following bands seem to represent non-Asian foreign music to most Thais I have met:

The Bee Gees (with 'I started a joke' being the number one song), The Eagles, The Scorpions, Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Marley

...and individual hits like 'Country Roads, Take Me Home', and 'Puff the Magic Dragon'...

Thai musicians often know a lot more Western bands and pop/rock music history than you might think, in particular American bands.

The Bee Gees some ten years after 'I started a joke'.

My vote would have to be Elvis. It's the only fan club of international fame that I've seen which advertises itself. :o

Bob Marley, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, U2, Queen and scorpian. post-39032-1186234762.gif

One of them seems a bit out of place...

Something to do with buffalo soldier i wonder ! :o

I think that it's the leather cap... it doesn't work for me.

(Although Freddie could pull it off from time to time.)

As john Mcenroe said " YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS "

Every Thai high school kid knows Westlife and Ronan Keating.

Everywhere I go, I hear their music

Their recent Bangkok tour was a sellout

What about Michael Learns To Rock?

They were from Denmark, I think, but almost unknown outside Asia. Thailand was probably a major base of fandom for them.

Yeah, I was also going to mention them. I remember all the MTV Asia promotion over their Thailand tours, and yeah they are completely and utterly unknown outside Asia. Big fish in a small sea.

After 30 years and across six continents of travel (N. America, S. America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia), I've heard Bob Marley's music emanating from both homes and bars more so than any other artist. From his relatively brief time on this Earth, his music has struck a chord with people from all walks of life to an inordinate degree. His universal message of love and suffering is a communal feeling that all people can relate to.

Rest in peace, Bob.... your music will live forever.

Every elevator knows them too.

Talking about elevators, Kenny G is quite big in Thailand.
