I have had a Toshiba external hard drive and used it with no problems for many years. Now when I try to use it a notice comes up and says Windows does not recognise it.

Does this mean I should now just throw it away, or is there any way I can get it working normally again?

I had the same problem with a WD Elements 2TB external HD. I bought a new connecting cable at Shopee and my HD works again.

I doubt my solution will work. I misread the problem as you cannot get to the data. Can you locate the computer it was originally attached to? Do you have access to another computer with lower # OS?

Have you tried to run scan disk?

Recova never really works.

Can you access at command prompt?
