Elephants and other sick animals evacuated from flooded shelter

National park officials, boats and FWD trucks are rushing to an elephant conservation centre in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai to evacuate about 100 elephants and hundreds of other animals, as floodwater reaches two metres and is still rising.

 

Atthaphon Charoenchansa, director general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said today that the rescue operation is being hampered because all roads leading to the Elephant and Environment Conservation Foundation centre are heavily flooded.

He also said that more volunteers are needed to help the first group of about 50 people, from the Sri Lanna National Park and from Chiang Dao district, who are already on their way to the scene, adding that a request for more boats has been submitted to the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

 

Even though elephants enjoy being in water, Atthaphon said that staying in it too long in water can cause problems and some of them in the conservation centre are not tame.

The video above was also on the BBC web site.

Apparently, the elephant bringing up the rear is blind which is why it is delayed.

I think that is is great the way that the other elephants seem to wait for the blind one to catch up.

Two Elephants Found Dead After Being Swept Away in Chiang Mai Floods

 

 

The hopes of rescuing two missing elephants were dashed on October 5, as their lifeless bodies were discovered after being swept away by floodwaters in Mae Taeng District. The elephants, identified as Pang Fasai and another as yet unnamed, were found entangled in debris after being carried downstream by the flood.

 

The Elephant Nature Park had earlier shared on social media that one elephant, Pang Fasai, had been swept towards a water diversion tunnel in an attempt to escape the rising floodwaters. Rescue teams and local mahouts launched an immediate search, but tragically, the elephants were found near debris in the vicinity of Sibsan Resort, Mae Taeng.

 

Veterinarians and officials are on-site to conduct further investigations. The confirmed death of Pang Fasai, an elephant from a local sanctuary, has devastated the community.

 

Prior to this, it was reported that another elephant, believed to be Pang Mae Kho, a disabled elephant also from the same sanctuary, had gone missing. The identity of this second deceased elephant is still under verification, though officials believe it to be Pang Mae Kho.

 

Earlier reports of an elephant named Pang Mae Boon Chang being found dead were later corrected. The blind elephant, also from the sanctuary, had been successfully rescued from the floodwaters the previous evening and is now safe.

 

So far, the flooding in Chiang Mai has claimed the lives of three elephants. Rescue teams continue their search for several other missing elephants, including ten untethered and aggressive males from a nearby sanctuary. Officials from the Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang are working with local authorities in a race against time to find and rescue these remaining elephants before further tragedy strikes.

That´s what an uninformed would say. You clearly have no understanding or knowledge at all how they treat and use elephants in Thailand. Conservation or tourist trap was a very valid question. There are tons of such information, so you might be the one doing the research. Cheers!

Not all elephant sanctuaries are tourist traps and many treat the jumbos very well.

A lot of sanctuaries do not even allow the tourists near the elephants. They observe them from a distance, a bit like being in the wild?

Many other rescue volunteers have also headed up there to help out and many other community groups from around the country have collected supplies and made donations.

Thailand excels at helping each other when the going gets tough.

 

Meanwhile here on the forum we have a few snide remarks from the usual culprits who are doing absolutely nothing apart from criticize.

They should be deported.
