Tak Bai Massacre Case Dismissed as Statute of Limitations Expires

A provincial court in Narathiwat has officially dismissed the long-running Tak Bai massacre case, marking a significant development nearly 19 years after the tragic event that left 78 protestors dead. The case was dropped last Friday due to the statute of limitations expiring, leaving no defendants available to stand trial.

The lawyer representing the relatives of the deceased, Rasada Manoorasada, expressed determination to continue seeking the truth, even as the formal legal process concludes without resolution. Criticism has been directed at state agencies, with demands to halt pensions for the retired fugitives implicated.

Moreover, there are calls for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to start an inquiry into the alleged neglect by Nong Chik police, accused of delaying the case investigations for nearly two decades. This year, the Office of Attorney-General finally pressed charges against seven retired senior figures from the military, police, and interior sectors.

The massacre took place on 25th October 2004, when 78 individuals tragically suffocated while being transported in cramped conditions during a 150km journey from Tak Bai police station to the Ingkayuth army barracks in Pattani.

Security measures have been tightened in and around the court amid these developments. The dismissed case underscores the complex challenges of seeking justice in prolonged legal battles.

  • Yeah!!!, all the murdering ar$e holes can now return home and get on with their miserable lives.

  • Thailand should be kicked off the UN for this. Infact they should never have been let in. I hope Trump pulls out of the un and gets a grip of Nato.

  • Just imagine the suffering of those 78 people stacked like logs in the stifling heat? And the frustration of those left behind seeking justice? You can rave all you like about what a wonderful country

There are civil routes open to those who lost loved ones.....but they would need significant financial and legal support.

It is very likely that this is the end of the road and the murdering ******** have got away with it.

the timing is just impeccable!  the statute of limitations has expired. nothing to see here.

They wanted a headline, and an appearance they were doing something about 78 people who were deliberately killed. They could have brought this case anytime in the last twenty year, but no. Now they can say .... We Tried, but time ran out.

The real question; who were they trying to convince they were doing something?

The true colours of Thailand... and they just got a seat on the Human Rights council ?

Punishment for army excess? They are above the law, just like the RTP. They don't deserve any special status, as they do nothing for Thai society. Yet, they have so much power and wealth. Nobody expected another outcome.

It's about time Thailand got rid of the ridiculous "statute of limitations" on cases like this. Did someone say RED BULL?

Just imagine the suffering of those 78 people stacked like logs in the stifling heat? And the frustration of those left behind seeking justice? You can rave all you like about what a wonderful country Thailand is and how sweet and kind its people can be, but behind the façade there are some ugly elements to Thai society rivalling the worst of corruption and depravity to be found in the region.

Tak Bai

Tak Bai, very dangerous place, lots of terrorism in the region.

Glad I don't live down there.

Worked across the border, around 40km away, Kota Bharu for a few years, unfriendly people there to, glad to get out of that horrible place.

Wow , there is a statute of limitations on murder ! This is an interesting country 🤔 No statute of limitations on murder in most civilized countries . There was just a 36 year old cold case murder solved in New York City with new evidence . There is actually a whole section of detectives that deal with these cold cases in the NYPD

An exemplary collaboration of police investigation, court proceedings and law making, everything worked exactly as designed. These people are not stupid, they only act like it when it's to their advantage: CC TV broken, statutes expired, devised legal loopholes, translation difficulties for Interpol forms, so sorry nah.

As for the perpetrators, they are part of the corrupt overall system and therefore protected by it.

Then, all Falangs will be kicked out of Thailand for that.

Was there ever any doubt?

These old politicans protect each other by delaying court proceedings and allowing guilty parties to leave the country until once again the statue of limitations has expired.

Blatant and shameful open flouting  of the justice system.

Amazing Thailand TIT

And where is the Red Bull kid  oh yeah, that’s right they’re waiting for the statues to run out amazing Thailand TIT

That's a maybe, however that doesn't justify the murder of the protesters and then allowing the murderous  scum to walk away free due to this archaic law.

I found the people in Kota Baru wonderful. I guess it depends how you approach and interact with  people. It's you, not 'the people'.

Sadly the reaction to this (and the red bull case) will be little if non existent, such is the ongoing, and in a way excusable, apathy of the people.

However there is absolutely no excuse for the apathy of both the press and the opposition (yes you peoples party) who should be raising merry hell both here and internationally and particularly with the HRC.

You have a voice and your failure to use it effectively makes you complicit.
